Hi there,

I'm on the point of buying (in Montechoro) so can I ask how bad the crime problem is?. I've seen the items about local burglaries, street mugging etc, plus the new drug relaxation idea, but how bad is it day-to day?
I suppose my question is - would you recommend the area now, or go elsewhere if you had to choose  again?
Thanks!

Drug relax laws came in years ago and have worked. Reported crime appears to be less in the whole albufeira area but there will still be the crimes you mention. recently 2 lads got mugged leaving a fair in faro for their cash and phones - could happen almost anywhere. I would think montechoro and albufeira rate quite high on the safer places to live compared to other towns around the world. We've probably had 20 000 clients thru our doors this year and I cant remember the staff telling me of more than a couple of small crimes - there could be more but I'm sure would have read or heard about them

This is a very useful place to go if anyone has any concerns about safety, especially if living in an isolated area.

http://www.safecommunitiesalgarve.com/

A recent statement from the regional police commander said "...overall crime so far this year had levelled off, compared with the same period last year in areas in the Algarve under the responsibility of the PSP and that violent/serious crime had decreased by a significant 19%."

We feel a lot safer here than in rural Bedfordshire. However like anywhere you can take sensible precautions when out in the early hours by making sure you dont go alone .
I wouldn't be put off by the odd item in press - they do after all have a newspaper to fill/sell

Hi I have been in the Algarve for three years now without any problems, but I do use security as far as I can. Lights on timers, cameras, LED security lights, Dusk to dawn light bulbs available in the Leroy Merlin shop, I use them for external lighting.

Ouch Unfortunately, it's no advertisement for for anyone thinking of buying in the area.
