Portimonense lost 5-4 on penalties away up at Leixões this afternoon, after the game had ended 0-0. Attendance 1,394. The next phase is indeed set to be played in groups on various mid week dates from the end of September until the week before Christmas. The 'Final Four' semi finals and final are scheduled for late January. PS game at Farense attracted 1,708 fans. Can't have been too exciting, a lot of time wasting with 12 minutes added time and only one yellow card. Players used had very high shirt numbers.

The Portuguese league seasons get under way this weekend, with the first games in the top two divisions.
The Algarve will have two representatives in the Liga Betclic (the top division) with Portimonense (Portimão), having escaped relegation last season, joined by Farense who finished runner-up in Division Two and were promoted. The opening matches are : Gil Vicente v Portimonense Saturday 12th 15.30hrs and Farense v Casa Pia also on Saturday ko 1800hrs. There will be no Algarve teams in the Second Division (Liga Sabseg) or in Liga 3, following the relegation of Moncarpachense. There will be only three Algarve teams in the southern section of the regionalised Fourth Division (a.k.a. Campeonato de Portugal Group D) with the good news that there will be no trips to the Azores! Imortal Albufeira retained their place from last season. They will be joined by the aforementioned Moncarapachense plus Louletano, promoted from the Algarve League. Four teams from near Lisbon, the two from Évora, Sintra, Elvas, Serpa, Vasco da Gama Vidigueira and the once mighty Vítoria Setubal make up the league. That competition begins on Sunday 20th August. However as bad luck would have it for any visitors, all three Algarve teams will be away from home that day. The matches on Sunday 27th are scheduled for a 5pm / 1700hrs ko and are as follows : Moncarpachense v GD Fabril, Louletano v Elvas (at the Algarve Stadium) and Imortal Albufeira v Juventude Évora. Moncarapachense by the way are back playing in their own little ground in the village after having to play in Olhão last season. Louletano continue to play at the Algarve Stadium, whose 26,000 capacity is rather more than enough for the average crowds in this league! The Algarve regional league does not begin until late September. PS I think I have read that Gibraltar's national team will be playing some 'home' games at the Algarve Stadium this coming season. Any information gratefully received.

A reminder that there are no Algarve teams in the Second and Third Divisions this season. Reported on the Algarve FA website that Olhanense have resigned from the Algarve League first division. Readers will recall that they were relegated from the national leagues last season, the first such demotion in their history. Carvoeiro United, who finished third in the Second Division, have been invited to take their place. A statement on the SC Olhanense website says (as Translated) "As everyone knows, Sporting Clube Olhanense has not had a senior team for more than a decade, during this period the club's senior football has been handed over to SAD, with the management of the football team being part of its object. For this reason and until the definitive extinction of the SAD is carried out, a process that the current management has already started, Sporting Clube Olhanense will officially continue without senior football, which does not mean that we do not have senior football at Estádio José Arcanjo. The current direction of the SCO signed a contract to share the facilities with Sporting Clube Olhanense 1912, and this will register a senior team in the district championship. We also take the opportunity to inform you that with the support of the City Council we are creating conditions in the stadium to receive the training teams of both clubs, freeing up the spaces that our teams occupy in the Municipal facilities. Sporting Clube Olhanense sees this situation as a benefit not only for the SCO but for all clubs, since the vacancy by the SCO of these spaces will allow the other Clubs to better develop their activity." SAD means Sociedade Anónima Desportiva ("Public limited sports company") I assume this means the 'new' team will be placed in the Algarve League second division. That's not clear.

Not a good weekend on the whole for the Algarve teams. Liga Betclic Porto 2 - 1 Farense desperately unlucky for Farense who had a player sent off on 73 minutes when it was 1-1, then Porto were given fifteen added minutes in which to score the winner, which they duly did after ten of them. Attendance 48,129 almost a sellout. Portimonense 1 - 4 Casa Pia att 2034. An inauspicious start for the hosts, with a beautiful headed own goal after six minutes. Next weekend Portimonense travel up to Arouca on Saturday, Farense will be at home to Chaves ko 1800hrs / 6pm on Saturday. That one's already a six-pointer with both teams on nul points after two games. In the Campeonato de Portugal group D Barreirense 2 - 0 Imortal Albufeira Oriental Lisboa 1 - 1 Moncarapachense Vìtoria Setubal 2 - 1 Louletano Next Sunday at 1700hrs / 5pm Louletano v Elvas, at the Algarve Stadium Imortal Albufeira v Juventude Évora Moncarapachense v GD Fabril

Statistically the visitors had the better of the game, except for that one vital number. Both the top teams played yesterday, Saturday. Famalicão 1 - 0 Farense att 4171. The stats show that Farense were well outplayed. They had a player sent off on 63 minutes and fell to the single goal scored in 78 minutes. Portimonense 1 -1 Estrela Amadora att 2607. Ten yellow cards dished out, seven to the visitors. Farense are 15th and Portimonense 16th (of 18 teams) but that will change as the two teams below them play each other this afternoon.

Big trouble at FC Porto yesterday. They want the result of the game annulled (a 1-1 draw agaisnt Arouca) because the referee's communications with the video studio went down and he made a phone call with them to check a penalty, which wasn't given. Porto allege misconduct by the match officials. Porto were 1-0 down to their lowly opponents at the time. No matter, they scored their equaliser after 19 minutes of added time.

The format and fixtures for the Algarve League Second Division have been announced. Fixtures begin on Saturday 7th October. Default time for kick-offs is 1800hrs, but some games are altered because of ground sharing. Second Division - split into two small sections, Barlavento (west) and Sotavento (east) The season runs from 7th October until mid-May. The default kickoff time is 1800hrs / 6pm on Saturdays, but many games are at earlier or later times because of ground sharing. Check carefully. Teams this season 'Highlight' is that both teams based in Almancil have folded. Imortal Albufeira have entered a 'B' team, as have Ferreiras and Moncarapachense. Also folded are AEF Joáo Moutinho, Sport Algoz Benfica and Quarteirense 1937. Série Barlavento (west) - Alvor, Bensafrim, Ferreiras B, Guia, Imortal B, Lagoa B, Mentes Desporto (translates roughly as Sporting Minds!), Messinense, Odiáxere, Os Armacancenses. Mentes Desporto are a resurrected team and will share the ground at Estombar with Carvoeiro United. Guia's ground is a little way to the north of the village centre, just off the road towards Algoz. A neat traditional little ground, no running track to spoil the view. Série Sotavento (east) 4 ao Cubo Olhão, Marítimo Olhanense, Campinense, Louletano B, Moncarapachense B, Olhanense 1912, Quarteirense SC, Sport Faro Benfica, Sambrasense (based in São Bras de Alportel) There is still no team based in Tavira. It was very fragmented fixture list last season, with some teams playing only every two or even three weeks. WOMEN'S FOOTBALL Both Ferreiras and Guia will be playing in the third division this season, which will begin on Sunday 1st October. It is highly regionalised, with the section in which both Ferreiras and Guia will play containing only three other teams, which are FC Barreirense (up near Lisbon), Lusitano Évora and Ourique. They play each other twice in the first phase, which will end in the middle of January. Then there begins a complicated series of second phase matches and playoffs. Guia will be playing their home games on the 'second' pitch at Guia, the one with the artificial surface.
