And a short while ago Liga 1 was played to a finish. Arouca put Rio Ave out of their misery, a 2-0 away victory completed a comprehensive 5-0 aggregate thrashing.

Google is my friend ...... Arouca is the home of the worlds longest [516m] pedestrian suspension bridge. Thumbs Up

Yes, Olhanense fell at the last hurdle. Failing to score in four of their six matches was indeed their weak point.

In the other group, Louletano beat Moncarapachense 1-0 in a meaningless match. That group was won by Oriental Dragon after a draw with Sporting B.

So, on the face of it, Olhanense, Louletano, Moncarapachense and Lagos will be in Ligue Four next season along with Imortal and no doubt a host of clubs from the Lisbon area.

We shall see when the fixtures come out early in August.

That suspension bridge near Arouca by the way is apparently very scary and costs €12 to walk across. It is 175 metres above ground level.

Some good news for next season is a small increase in the number of clubs across the Algarve. We don't yet know 100% what the formats of the leagues will be.

Armacanenses (Armação de Pêra) are back with us. Also, if I read correctly, two new clubs namely Associação Académica da Bela Vista and Associação Desportiva Geração de Génios. It's not clear whethere the latter are adult or age-group only.

No doubt more will surface as the weeks go on. The Algarve League season start date is not yet known but will be around the third week of September. The national leagues begin in August.

Something else to look forward to and for two of which tickets (if on sale) ought be readily available, are three internationals at the Algarve Stadium :

Portgual v Ireland Wednesday 1st September World Cup 2022 qualifier
Portugal v Luxembourg Tuesday 12th October World Cup 2022 qualifer
Portugal v Qatar Saturday 9th October friendly

As an Ireland supporter I will watch that September 1st match from behind a couch with fear and hope in equal measure.

Just gossip. Read an article that Vancouver Whitecaps are sniffing around Ryan Gauld. Have offered him a 3 million dollar contract.
Having recently visited Vancouver it is a wonderful city but so expensive to live there. The cost of property is so bad that it's had a major impact on the jobs market as only a fortunate few can afford to live there.
I expect a huge amount of transfer activity once the Euro's have finished.

Fixtures are out for the top two divisions.

Portimonenese begin with an away game, then will be at  home over the weekend of 13 - 16 August to Gil Vicente. The weekend after, they travel to Tondela. A fairly easy start.

In Liga 2 (which does not seem to have a sponsor ths season coming) Farense also begin with an away game, then on 13 - 16 August will be at home to Rio Ave, also relegated last season.

Obviously, dates and ko times are subject to alteration for television. However, most of the games over the second weekend are likely to take place on Saturday 14th August, as Sunday 15th is an important religious holiday.

Spectators will be permitted, but the law in place requires a limit of 33% capacity (which should not worry either club considering their average attendance) and of course presentation of the European Digital Health Certificate or a negative test result.

No sign yet of fixtures for Liga 3.

The official website just shows it as Liga Portugal 2, although Sabseg are shown among the  list of league sponsors at the bottom of the page.

Sabseg is an insurance company.

The fixtures for the newly formed Liga 3 will be published on Monday 19th.

The byzantine plan for the season is this.

The 24 clubs will be split into two sections of 12, north and south. They will play each other twice in the first phase. The top four of each section will advance to the promotion groups of the second phase, the remainder will be playing a second phase to avoid relegation.

The promotion group will be split into two groups of four, playing each other twice. The first and fourth placed teams of each of the first phase groups will be grouped with the second and third placed of the other group. That could mean some long trips.

Thw two group winners will be promoted to the Segunda Liga and will also contest the overall Liga 3 championship in a playoff match on a neutral ground.

The teams finishing second in each of the groups will play a two leg playoff match. The winners of that will play off for promotion against the team finishing third from bottom in the Segunda Liga. No pressure lads. The other two teams will remain in Liga 3.

Meanwhile, the 16 teams trying to avoid relegation will be split into four groups of four, playing each other twice.  Bonus points will be carried over from the first phase. The four clubs finishing bottom of each group will be relegated to regional leagues, the remainder stay in Liga 3.

With no games over Christmas and New Year and no midweek fixtures, plus weekends set aside for the early rounds of the FA Cup, plus the gaps between the various phases, the season won't finally end until 29th May for those in playoff games.

Imortal will not be in Liga 3 next season. In fact not one team from the Algarve will be.

Season 21/22 kicks off this coming week with the largely inconsequential League Cup. Portimonense have the TV honours on Friday with Farense travelling for a Saturday evening date oop North ......

Portimonense v Academica [2015 ko].
Chaves v Farense [1800 ko].

I have noted two Farense pre-season Friendlies in the last few day, v Braga and a Benfica side. Looks like they are preparing for an allout attacking assault on Liga 2, .... both finished 0-0. Wink

Imortal might yet be in the Campeonato de Portugal (4th tier) next season. The sticking point about any promotion was 'winning' the Algarve League after having played only six games.

That division is starting on 29th August, so I would expect fixtures to be out in a week or two.

I cannot access Imortal's Facebook page. Here in France one can only see Facebook with an account, which I do not have. Any views from Imortal gratefully received.

Imortal will be playing in the fourth tier Campeonato de Portugal next season. Fixtures are due to be announced during a ceremony beginning at 1600hrs this afternoon. There will be five Algarve teams in the group. Nationally there will be six groups, arranged geographically.

The teams in Imortal's Group will be :

FC Barreirense
Gr. União Sport (Évora)
CD Pinhalnovense
Juventude SC (Évora)
FC Serpa
Louletano DC
CF Esperança Lagos
Imortal DC
Lusitano GC Moncarapachense
SC Olhanense

Once the group has played each other twice, only 18 games mark, there follows a complicated series of second phase and playoffs.

The first two in each group will go forward to the 'promotion' series of the second phase. Two groups of six arranged north and south, playing each other twice. The top two in each group will be promoted to Liga 3. The two group winners will play a one-off match for the overall title.

The remaining teams will be split into regional groups of four or five and play each twice in the 'relegation' second phase. The top two in each group would stay in the Campeonato, the rest will be relegated into Regional Leagues.

A short season therefore, but a lot of travelling for some. Even the most successful teams will play only 29 games plus maybe a couple of  cup ties, the lower echelon as few as 24 plus cups. These games would normally be on Sundays.

I am travelling today, but will do my best to confirm everything tonight or maybe tomorrow morning.
