A heads up. The two Multibanco ATM´s at the old Millennium bank in the old town square have been removed. They were the only ones down there you could use free of charge with a £ card.

Confirm that two of three bars I go to regularly are cash only. Bigger bars where meals are served usually take cards. Best ask first. My local corner shop only takes cards for €5 and over, which is fairly common. All major supermarkets etc do of course take cards.

Contactless limit here is €50 by the way. Your own card may have limits on the number of transactions on the same day or adding up to certain amount before a PIN is needed. Mine do.

I got 1.17 at Ramsdens on Monday for my November trip .. best on the high street if purchased online. I've got euros to bring. It's been over a decade since we were last there (cannot believe it) I'm sure there will be many changes. I've heard there are lots of smaller bars, cafes etc that are cash only and those that do take cards prefer tips in cash. The cambio near Eddy's bar was giving 1.07 on Saturday. It had a sticker with 7 on it over whatever was there before. Hi cubsur,

I assume you mean if you pay in € your UK bank will do the conversion?

I checked the difference when I got home, and when my cards were charged in £ it cost about 4% more than other charges on the same day that were charged as normal in €.

Not a big difference, but it adds up ...

If you opt to pay in £ your UK bank will do the conversion. That is almost always a little more favourable.

Same here,

On payment I checked the terminal and there was three options I seem to remember 1 pounds.

2 euros and 3 ignore exchange. I asked the waiter which one do I use and he said he doesn't know.

So I pressed "ignore exchange" and ended up paying in pounds. So I think I should have pressed the Euro one.

Up till then I had be paying in cash, but as this was our last night and used my card as I wanted to keep what Euros I had left for the journey home.
