Buying any golf equipment in the Algarve is difficult and/or very expensive.
They would rather sell you designer shorts, shirts & jumpers etc at extortionate prices than actual equipment.
As far as I know the only places to buy golf shoes in the Algarve are -

Sports Direct in Guia - same prices as UK but I don't know what sort of range they have. The website shows a good variety but not sure if they keep them all instore. Don't buy their own brands - Dunlop, Slazenger, Adams, Wilson.

Specific Golf Shops like Nevada Bob's etc mostly in or around the Almancil area - never been to one here so can't vouch for range or prices but probably a lot more expensive than in the UK.

Pro Shops on most golf courses - if buying at one of these expect to pay top dollar. A pair that would cost you £40-£50 in the UK are likely to cost you well over 200 Euro at a Pro Shop in the Algarve.

Personally I'd buy Foot Joy
When you say "I used to wear ordinary footware" where did you play?
There's not a Golf Club anywhere that would knowingly let you on the course in anything but proper golf shoes
