Can absolutely recommend Loule Carnaval. It`s worth the 2 euro entrance fee to watch the mucky old men with their video cameras falling over themselves when the float with half naked females comes around. Seriously though have a look on youtube for a taster it`s a great atmosphere.

Serious question, why does anyone go to the Algarve in the winter months when most places are shut and the temperatures are not that great ?
Why not go to somewhere like the canaries where everywhere is open, the temperatures are far better and it's just as cheap to fly to.

Autumn, Winter and Spring is the best time of the year as far as we're concerned and we usually spend about 4 months there from October to April. The main reasons are -
1. The weather is generally good, much better than the UK 2. Most places are only shut for a month or two and more than enough stay open all the time 3. There are plenty of things to do & places to go - golf, walking, bird watching, cycling, tours, excursions. In fact there's not a lot that you can do in the Summer that you can't do in the Winter. 4. There are not so many holiday makers about so it's quiet, peaceful and relaxing 5. It's not the Canaries

All of those activities you can do in other countries, and with better weather.
Most places have better weather than the UK,so that's no claim to fame.
Most other tourist resorts have their quieter periods
I used the canaries as an example, and as much as i like the Algarve,it isn't the only place in the world, and there is far better.
You must be mad to want to stay there for 4 months.Mind you, listing golf as an activity shows you must be a coffin dodger with too much time on your hands

You did mention somewhere with sunnier weather that cost the same to get to Paul. That pretty much narrows it down to the Canaries doesn't it? The med will have similar weather to here, and southern hemisphere destinations cost a whole load more.

Forget I mentioned the canaries.Like I said it was an example and I only mentioned the price because it's roughly the same sort of price to fly to as the Algarve.I wasn't actually saying any other destination had to be the same or cheaper to fly to.
Again I will point out that I wasn't having a pop in my come back reply about to why Dicey chooses to go to the Algarve for the winter months,i was simple making the point that all the things that were said can be done elsewhere and saying the Algarve isn't another destination (Canaries) isn't really much of a reason.Everywhere else in the world isn't the Algarve, but that doesn't make them bad destinations. Now if it were said that it was because of the price of accommodation or the fact that Portugal is a low terrorist threat or maybe that he had vistited lots of other destinations and felt they weren't that great then I could understand that more.
To be honest my original question was more aimed at people who visit for a weeks holiday, rather than part time ex pats who have probably traveled the world and maybe have fallen in love with the Algarve,or maybe they don't like temperatures that are too hot.
Personally I wouldn't travel to the Algarve after October or before May,this is due to the weather as I like it to be in the 20's,also everywhere is open at those times of the year and because I only visit for a max of 2 weeks I like to make the most of it by going to places that would be shut in the winter months such as the water parks,Zoomarine, old town, the strip.
Anyway my post was not created to pee anyone off so I apologise if you feel I have done that as that was not my intention. It was simple to create a pros and cons discussion of winter breaks in different destinations.

Nope, none of those reasons. However, we do own an apartment in The Algarve and we don't have one anywhere else so that sort of influences our decision. However, the reason for buying there was because of all the reasons I stated earlier. We could have bought one somewhere else but in our opinion The Algarve, and Albufeira, is the best place.
What I also find interesting is that, despite the fact that you would never go between October & May you seem to know an awful lot about what it's like during that time, and most of what you say is inaccurate - e.g. it actually is very often "in the 20's and the Old Town & Strip are definitely not shut"

I also haven't been to the North Pole,but I know it's cold.
Well a good thing about the internet is that you can find out information about a place without actually having to be there.
Now if my information is wrong then you'd better have a word with Cubsur who replied to people when asked the question of what is open/closed in the winter months and he explained that most places are shut in said areas, the strip web cam (when working) confirms this to an extent.
Also I would direct you to Zoomarine that I mentioned is currently closed as is the water parks.
And whilst yes the temperatures can get into the 20's earlier than May,it's more likely that you will have better temperatures in May than you would in January.Again you only have to look at Cusbar's weather to see that today will not hit 20
So by using a combination of opening times on web sites, online weather forecasts and information posted by people who live in the area,I think it's fair to say I get a good feel for what it's like, without having to actually be there in person.

They only shut for a month or two, maybe November & January, so that's 2 months out of 7 and many places do not shut at all. More or less everything (except waterparks) will open again in February - I know because I've been there every February since 2002. If you don't want to go then fine, but I, and thousands of other like me, love it in the Winter.

I think some people like it very hot when abroad while others are happy enough for the weather to be better than it is at home, so that's the difference . In the winter months you can definitely get a cheapy in Spain & Portugal , for the same quality of accommodation than you would get in the Canary Islands, as January & February are very expensive there. We went every January to Tenerife for years, loved it , so amazing to step from winter into summer in 4 and a half hours. We stayed in some beautiful hotels in Costa Adeje. But I have also been to Malaga in January , got lovely sunny weather and loved it too. So I'd be happy to do both ! 😊

Paul We rent all winter for 500 euros a month in Albuferia fully equipped apartment all in. Daughter and Grandaughter are visiting us on Monday £9.99 each way from Leeds/Bradford well actually one way is free for Grandaughter because no airport tax to pay because of age so it was actually £29.97 for the two of them. Now we actually love Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria So if you can: A...find me an apartment for 500 euros a month over there. B...get me flights for £9.99..must be Northern airport willing to travel as far South as Manchester Give me a shout mate. Thanks in advance.

Paul Should have added Zoomarine opens March 28th. Get there before summer crowds start building up a lot more pleasant and if you have small children you can normally wangle them a go in the boat that the dolphins pull around the pool in the show.

So you say it's the price that appeals to you for Portugal this time of year, rather than the climate or location.
So if the accommodation was the same in the canaries (again I will stress the canaries was an example,as I've never visited before) would you rather go there ? As you both say it's nice, but on the other hand Dicey doesn't seem to like the suggestion of the canaries.

We went there a couple of years ago in October and it wasn't too busy then and the temperatures were ok,but i wouldn't go any later than the end of October personally.
Again going in March I think it could be a bit hit and miss with the weather as going in May has been a bit iffy on some days.Becasue when we travel to Portugal it is for a holiday we obviously want to get as much sun for our money and going much earlier for me would be risking that. For anyone staying for months then I suppose it's not so bad as you are guaranteed to see good weather at some point.

Went to Albufeira last June going into July and it was a bit too hot really,so much so that the kids couldn't walk out in the sun for much more than 10 minutes without feeling uncomfortable, and the decking around the pool would burn your feet.

Of course price comes into things...But not RATHER go there (Canaries) I would have a month break there in the winter..thinking of doing that next year regardless of price. Climate comes into it...at home in UK it has been below zero for the past week would have been muffled up to the eyeballs...here pants and Tshirt...I don`t do tourist shorts and flip flops January.
Location: UK or Algarve?.....Algarve I live in one of the most beautiful locations in the UK imo but next week my Grandaughter wont be building sandcastles on the beach in Saltburn not without getting a sand rash and wearing a wetsuit all being well she will be here. I also wont be in UK paying £3 a pint tonight I will be paying €1.50 with entertainment thrown in. Algarve has a lot of good things going for it in the winter. Nothing better than a nice long walk on the beach without tripping over the summer hordes. Regards Dicey`s choice of destination his choice is his choice reading his posts he seems intelligent enough to make a rational decision on where he chooses to spend his time. Don`t forget to forward those prices if you find them.

When I first came across the £2 deal there was loads of destinations and a good choice of airports to fly from.By the time I posted on here a few hours later most of the flights had been sold and thought it was only worth posting up the deal for Faro airport.
Good job really as could you imagine if I posted cheap flights for another destinations,I'd probably be spat at in the street

As a fully paid up member of the 'old boys club/high posters' may I take this opportunity to invite new members along at any time. The title is a bit misleading as we talk to absolutely anyone who cares to listen, from high posters to low posters, to northern people and southern people and even the Irish, to residents and non residents and even to Dog Man who hasn't washed for years and costs me 50 cents a time. We DO meet up in certain pubs around town where we would love to meet any new members but please bear in mind, we are all very handsome, refined and like to discuss the finer things in life.

Mandingo is indeed part of Albufeira and is a good friend of mine. He also likes being known as Dog Man. He also is known as 50 cents as that is what he likes to ask for. He speaks Dutch and English and is a lot more intelligent than some give him credit for.

Does anyone know what species of fish can be caught at this time of year, and where is best to fish!

I have seen a lot of people fishing off Falesia Beach and I've spoken to quite a few of them. According to them they fish for Robalo (Sea Bass), Dorada (Sea Bream) and Cavalhina (Mackerel). To be honest though I've very rarely seen anyone actually catch anything, even though they've got all the gear and use up to 3 or 4 rods at a time. Still, there's usually a few down there, especially in the Winter, so presumably they must catch something or else they're just getting away from the missus As I understand it you need a permit to fish from the beach. These can be obtained through any Multibanco (Cash) Machine. This link tells you all about it. http://www.angloinfo.com/how-to/portugal/algarve/lifestyle/sports-leisure/fishing" rel="nofollow - https://www.angloinfo.com/how-to/portugal/algarve/lifestyle/sports-leisure/fishing You might also find this website useful http://www.portugal-sport-and-adventure.com/fishing-portugal.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.portugal-sport-and-adventure.com/fishing-portugal.html

Hi there do not post very often. I usually go to Albufeira every September but over the last few months also went in November 2016 for 11 days, January this year for 12 days and are coming over first 2 weeks in March - excellent place all year round and weather has been great and so inexpensive compared to tourist season. I am just about to post a question for you experts - excellent forum by the way
