My experience of Windows from '95 on has been that shortly after installation of the OS Microsoft has to issue updates, service packs etc.  I think there were 3 service packs for XP (late lamented).

It appears we will get Win10 at the end of this month.  My inclination is to wait a month or so untill all the bugs are dealt with.

What do you think?

I hate it when they "improve" computer stuff, it always takes me months to find out where stuff I could put my finger on straight away has now moved to to...

But then I am an idiot.

I would wait a while if I were you Jock.

I think that's what I'll do.  The upgrade is free for a year.  Thanks.

My home PC is poised and as I have backup in the form of this netbook I shall take the plunge when back. I shall inform.

One of the attractions of 10, if I've understood the publicity, is that it'll bring back some XP features. Why then not just keep XP going?  Perhaps the XP code had become "tired" and too difficult to keep patching.

I've installed 10 in a creaky old Windows 7 laptop, not my main machine.  The install took a while and the first couple starts after install were slow.  Now it starts at least as quickly as 7 did.
The old machine seems to be running a bit faster now that it has settled down.  Within a month I can revert to the old OS but if it carries on as it is I'll probably keep 10 on the laptop.  After a couple of months I'll think about upgrading the main machine depending on reviews.

I will upgrade eventually but prefer to wait a while until some of the bugs & fixes are sorted.

The free upgrade is time limited.

I have had a notification that I can download it to my netbook but the internet connection where I am now in France is so slow (400kpbs!) that it timed out.

I shall have to wait until I am back in the modern world in 10 days time.

Took the plunge and installed 10 overnight.  Working well.  Had to spend some time changing most of the default settings but other than that a simple process.

Installed this morning as it's raining & nowt else to do. Took about an hour + another hour to sort things out & get rid of a load of crap I'll never use.
Not sure that I like it more than 8.1 but hey ho, it's done now.

I upgraded to Windows 10 yesterday without any problems, just the tweaking of a few things as I expected. All seems well so far Smile

Me too. Now running Windows 10 on my 5 year old laptop. The only real thing I have a problem with it that is rather slow to load on startup, some tweaks needed.

The irritating issue I have is that when i click the network connections icon on the task bar quite often nothing happens at all. A pain when not at home trying to connect even to my portable hot-spot.

I cannot load Windows 10 onto my desktop PC, it informs me that my graphics card is not suitable.

Not sure if this is connected to your issue but when I upgraded to Windows 10 everytime my PC went into sleep mode (hibernation) it lost the network dongle when waking up. I had to restart the PC to pick it up again.

I resolved this by the following:-

  • "Windows key" + X > Device Manager > Expand the Network adapters section
  • Right-click on the wireless network card > Properties > Power Management tab
  • Uncheck option Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power + OK:

  • Wink

I had the same issue on this desktop where i use a wireless dongle in lieu of a wireless card and resolved it in the same manner.

I am tweaking away on laptop later.

Just finished installing a large update to Win 10.  Took almost as long to install as the original. Everything is working OK but it has put me back to the original default programs.  My preferred browser is Firefox and the update put me back to I.E.  Didn't take long to reset this and the PDF viewer to Adobe.
Previously I could not get Cortana and Search but now I can.  Whether I want Cortana is doubtful but we'll see.  Startup seems slightly faster.  The update rejected a Win 95 version of Winzip (version 7.0) which I had been using on Win 10.  I'll try reinstalling it and see what happens.
Other than that it's working fine.

I installed Win 10 as soon as it was available and it is faster if you only want to stick to minor stuff, e-mail, etc. Mostly, it is designed to direct you to more Microsoft products. The big failure is that it refuses to recognise `outsider` pen drives .. and there is a big clamour to get back to Windows 7 ...

It will cost me money ... as I am now having to look for a smaller, cheap `7` laptop, or tablet.

Never had a problem with USB flash drives of whatever make.  Maybe I'm just lucky.
Perhaps the new update will solve the problem.

Had an update today - Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
    Took about an hour.
Not sure it was worth it as I can't see any significant changes.

Crashed mine too - wouldn't start up this morning. Something about no boot directory found. Turned it off, started up again & it was fine.
When I installed it yesterday got a message saying that it couldn't install because I had copyrighted music files stored. So I moved them to an external hard drive and reinstalled. Everything seemed to work fine yesterday and then I get another problem this morning.
Coming to Albufeira today so I won't be installing it on the PC I keep there.

Anyone installing it might find this site useful

I had no problems with Windows 10 - been running fine for over a year.
However, we are not talking about Windows 10.
What we are talking about is that when you install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update the problems start.
This is currently being rolled out and depending on the make/model of your PC you should get it anytime soon.
If you haven't had it yet then my advice would be to avoid it as the negatives far out weigh the positives.

If you haven't downloaded  last year's Windows 10 "Anniversary Update" by June you will no longer get security patches.

Its definitely a marmite situation, I use it personally, and both of my companies run it without any problems.

    Fine for me too.
I hated having to lose XP when it was no longer maintained and was not overjoyed with Win10.  Now I've used it for a year and a half I'm happy with it.  When I installed Win10 on an old Win7 machine it speeded up.
