ALBUFEIRA AND NEARBY - SMALL SHOPS AND CONVENIENCE STORES

Updated October 2024. Many thanks to the several contributors without whom this list would not be so comprehensive. I have been unable to check many of the places out of town.

This list is grouped by area. It will be updated as often as possible. If you have any contributions please send a personal message to cubsur. Opening hours are subject to change around major holidays eg almost all shops are CLOSED on Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday even if they are open on other less important holidays. All these corner shops will be more expensive for many items than the bigger shops, especially for UK brands.

Great service!

Britain and Portugal have a Treaty of Alliance since 1373! The oldest in the world between two sovereign states. Catarina de Bragança introduced the custom of drinking tea in England.

Another local shop has closed down. This time it is the Ali Super opposite the health centre, which was the nearest to Eden Resort, Clube Albufeira and Camping Albufeira. That means that excepting small, expensive on site shops there is nothing with a mile or so in any direction  for any of those places.

That makes at least four shops gone in the last six weeks. Sign of the times.

The mini market referred to in the chart above on Rua Dunfermline, Areias Sao Joao, under the heading 'Valmangude/Forte do Vale' is indeed on the corner near the Tropical Sol Apartments and opposite the Eirasol Apartments and has certainly not closed down. I think it is actually called Mercado Tropical Sol. It opens from early morning to around 9-0 p.m. in the evening. Well stocked, but a tad dearer than Continente and Pingo Doce.

Windmill Hill and Cerro Grande people please note that the Ali Super next to the Arte Bar has closed down for good.

Apart from the mini-market, it's a long way now to the shops!

No suprise to be honest, when it re-opened it was really not well stocked and at NY it was dismal to say the least. A pity really cos it was in a catchment area of a lot of residential property not just holiday property and also one of the main high schools of albufeira, obviously they chose not to shop there.  I did support it when we were over but at NY the cheapest bottle of vinho on the shelves was about €8, thinking about it now, they were prob trying to sell off the stock they had. It's a pity and sadly I hope it doesnt have an effect on the other little businesses that are struggling there, like the little pattiserie and Artes Bar and the Cerro Grande restaurant as they are all really worth a visit and they really do try hard to make a go of their businesses!

Sign of the times. Almost al the Ali Supers that re-opened have closed down again - I was in Vilamoura yesterday and the one there is closed as are the former stores in Almancil and Quinta do Lago.

Any supermarket that relies on visitors for trade is going to struggle these day. Ali Super were apparently badly managed in the first place, plus most people now jump in their cars and go to the hypermarkets as they do everywhere.

You may have read that the defunct AliSuper name has been bought by another supermarket chain (can't remember the name) and it does look as if the old AliSuper opposite the Health Centre and the fairly large one in Avenida da Liberdade near the bus and taxi stands are being repainted and made ready for re-opening. I shall have a closer  look later.

Whether a relatively small town can sustain so many supermarkets remains to be seen.

I can confirm that the former Alisupers in Avenida da Liberdade and also the one at the Windmill Hill end of town next to Arte Bar are both being repainted into new company colours. I didn't see anyone actually working nor were there any notices concerning re-opening. Watch this space.

The Alisuper in Acoteias, which is quite large and opposite the Sheraton/Pine Cliffs closed, for the second time last November. However, they did put a notice in the window at the time saying that it would be "re-opening soon"
"Soon" probably meant anytime now given that there will be more tourists about - no Portuguese in their right minds would shop there when there are far better & cheaper alternatives 10 minutes up the road in Olhos D'agua & Albufeira - it's just way too expensive, even for people who self cater at the Pine Cliffs.

Up until 5 or so years ago they were very busy & had a fish counter, a butchers, a good deli section & they baked their own bread section. However, this all dissapeared 3 or 4 years ago. For the last 2 years the shop has been very short of stock with loads of empty spaces on the shelves with even basic everyday things like Coke out of stock - lack of credit from the suppliers I assume. The fruit & veg was often rotting on the shelf so consequently they had very few customers last year even during the peak season.

There's another smaller shop about 500 yards down the road (Miraparque) that used to be an Alisuper too but it's now owned by the people who originally had the Alisuper franchise. Prices there are not cheap either but at least they're more competitive, it's well stocked so hence & it's quite busy.

If it does re-open, under Alisuper or another name, then they'll need to get their act together.

I'm back on the 18th so I'll let you know what's happening when I return.

The Alisupers in the old town had the same notice on their doors for two years! The Avenida da Liberdade one is still there.

Any updates gratefully received as I don't get over to Açoteais very often.

It is looking good.  There's an article in the Portugal News today.  I tried to post a link earlier but it wouldn't work, possibly because of copyright.

The new owner is José Nogueira, who owns two fruit, vegetable and meat companies in Spain. The take-over follows "a government-brokered deal involving the Lamego-based Nogueira group and a series of banks". It's hoped that 26 stores will be re-opened by September, possibly with more to follow.  There's mention of "a rebranding exercise clearly intended to give the store a gourmet feel"!

I think the Vale do Lobo store has already opened.

The Ali Super opposite the Health Centre has re-opened I think. Certainly people were going in and out but I was on a bus, so couldn't be 100%.

This is the one closest to Eden Resort, Clube Albufeira and Camping Albufeira.

"Surely you'd think it would be a bit of a gold mine if managed correctly?  Anyhow, I'm with you mate."

Well, the previous owners found that holidaymakers alone could not sustain the business over a whole year, that allied to dire mis-management.

Albufeira has a huge number of supermarket and corner shops compared with towns of similar size in the UK. Don't forget that in winter this is a town of 20,000 then in July and August 100,000 are here. It's hard work to sustain a business on a few week's income as many restaurants and bars are finding out.

So as everyone leaps into their cars and heads for Algarve Shopping don't be surprised when the local shops close down.

Good luck to them.

Update Alisuper in Acoteias.

Well, it's reopened but still under the name of Alisuper. However, it has undegone a complete refurbishment - new logo, new facia, new fidges & displays. The butcher & fresh fish counters have been reinstated as have the deli & bakery departments. The shop is now fully stocked (first time in 3 years) so all in all, it's a great improvement & it does look quite nice.

Didn't have time to do any in depth price checking so it will be interesting to see on my next visit if they are now even remotely competitive with everyone else - previously they were excessively expensive compared to the competition, both locally in Acoteias & slightly further afield in Albufeira.

And of course, pricing will ultimately be the difference between success & failure. You can "rebrand" & smarten a store up as much as you like but unless your prices are reasonably competitive then you stand little or no chance of surviving.

As yet I cannot find out the opening times - there is a notice on the sliding door but as the door is open, you can't see what it says.

Anyway, I spent 30 minutes in there at 5pm. All the fruit & veg look very nice & fresh, the fish & meat counters are well stocked & there are 6 or 7 members of staff around.

An extended look at prices suggests that they're still around the same levels as before which is not good news. They're more expensive (+10%/15%) than the shop 100 yards away in Mira Parque & considerably more expensive (+25%) versus Pingo Doce etc. Furthermore, there are no what you would call blinding special opening offers or discounts.

The whole time I was in there I was the only customer so it begs the question of how busy they will get. They can only survive from tourists staying in Acoteias at the Pine Cliffs etc but to be honest there are virtually no tourists around this area at the moment - it's almost deserted & no busier than it was in February. If they don't have a good summer it'll be gone again in the Autumn.

The bottom line is how long will they be able to keep buying fresh stuff (fruit, veg, fish, meat etc) and chucking it out when it hasn't been sold & it's gone off. This will in turn lead to the closure of the fish & buthchers depts & they'll quickly be back to square one.

Ali Super in Avenida da Liberdade is also open, 0830 - 2000 daily. I also passed by the little one in the Rua das Telecommunicaçoes at the bottom of the hill that goes up to Floyd's bar and Cerro Branco. Shopfitters were working inside, so re-opening looks to be fairly soon.

I don't recall this one actually ever closing so it might have passed into private ownership as many of the smaller ones did and maybe they never bothered to change the signs.

Yes it was closed twice over the last 2 years mainly during the winter months,  was open in Oct 2011,  closed in January when I was over  and reopened  at Easter, they seem to have had a complete fit out, but not sure if it's private owner or not, they do have the same sign.

Yesterday, they were busy stocking up the Ali Super in Rua das Telecommunicações (that's the one near Cerro Branco) so re-opening must be imminent. How they expect to do much business with two hypermarkets within five minutes walk escapes me, but at least they are trying.

Can anyone tell me what time the supermarkets near the worm roundabout close? I'm on an an evening flight in July and will want to grab essentials (water etc) before heading out for the night. Staying at the tropical sol and can see that the shop there closes at 9pm but don't think we'll be there before it closes.

Anyone staying up in Páteo or the Encosta da Orada may like to know that the Ali Super at the Albufeira Jardim II complex has re-opened. It's hours are 0830- 2100 daily. The street name is Rua Cesario Verde, the street turns off the main road by the traffic lights.

It's barely 50 metres from the other shop and I doubt there is enough business for both, so which one will go first I wonder?

If anyone or anyone you know is planning to go to an Ali Super tomorrow (May 1st) be ware that they will be CLOSED.

May 1st is of course an official public holiday and some other small shops will be closed as well.

So far as I know the big stores are open as they always are.

Not surprised if the one in Acoteias is anything to go by - lots of "out of date" products, rotten fruit & veg, sky high prices and disinterested staff.
They have reduced the store size by 50% yet there are still empty shelves.
Even though it now only opens in the summer there's hardly anybody that uses it.
Coviran is only a few hundred yards down the road and it's just so much better in every respect.
Wouldn't be a great shock if this one closed too.

I shall examine the former prior to my arrival at One 4 the Road for the evening's cultural activities.

Their new shops are not listed on their website but interestingly neither is the one in Rua Dunfermline near the Forte do Vale, which has been open for a while.

Anyone who spots a new Spar, do tell and preferably with opening times!

A heads up that the Oceano supermarket at Patroves is 'closed for renovations' - people were working inside. No re-opening date given.

Also, the new ALDI at Vale de Parra is going to be pretty big. Picture taken this afternoon. Click for full size.

Vale de Parra is obviously the place to be. A few steps from ALDI is this rather imposing looking development of I know not what.

And also, although there was no point in taking a picture, a few chaps were toiling away at the new Iceland store coming in Galé. No sign of any opening date.

It’s all happening in Vale de Parra!
That other “imposing” development you mention Tom, the primary unit is going to be another restaurant, the other units are all retail. When I expressed the view that it would take years to find occupants I was told they were all already taken.
I also here another restaurant later in the year next to Jompra.
On the flip side, it looks like O’Girasol has closed.
Oceana has been taken over so they are all being closed in turn for refit in new companies style, like the one in Vale de Parra that opened in its new livery a couple of weeks ago.

"On the flip side, it looks like O’Girasol has closed."

I went past it the other day it still had stuff outside but someone else has also said it was closed. Also apparently closed is Lageado by the Glenridge resort a bit further up the road.

Coviran has taken over the Oceano chain. The store on the main road near Vale de Parra is now branded Coviran Plus Oceano and has re-opened. The other one round the back of Bayside etc was also open last Thursday.

I must admit I thought it was open when we passed yesterday as there were quite a few cars in the car park. We passed another Aldi at Logoa which looked identical.

We visited the Coviran Oceano on the way back and it was quite modern and smart with more stock than before. 🍞🍗🍳

Yes, the new ALDI is open, it’s a nice store and, for us, very convenient. I do feel for the older, smaller local shops, it’s clearly going to impact on their business and I would think Apolonia will also take a hit.
But, always a but isn’t there, they have provided a perfectly serviceable car park yet the latest trend seems to be Portuguese husbands drop their wives to do the shop and then sit in the car, windows down, radio blasting to wait for them, but there must be a rule that says you can’t use a parking bay and ignoring the inconvenience to the shoppers/pedestrians, you have to park as close to the door as you can, this also when there’s five partaking, blocks the car park as well, it’s a clever game when played well and also no one walking past, when they unravel a route, can enjoy your music as each car is blasting out a different radio station.
Let the chaos begin and sod everybody else!

Thanks Hamlet. I haven't been that way lately. All the small SPAR stores around town have now closed, leaving only the larger ones at Avenida da Liberdade near the bus stops and taxis, in Rua das Telecomunicações at the bottom of Cerro Branco hill and the one in Rua Vasco da Gama that goes down to Auramar and Aquamarina. Their store over in Sesmarias, Estrada do Castelo, is also open for business.

Their shop at the marina is not listed on their website but it was there last week.
