Just a word to say that when i walked home on Sunday, I noticed a lot of fairly hefty rocks on the beach between the Pier and the new lift. These are of a size to break your toe on, worse if you jump in the sea and land on one. These rocks will be semi-submerged at high tide and you won't see them until too late.

Take care. It will be few weeks probably until the natural action of the sea and sand covers them or takes them away,.

I think there are a lot of folks that don't realise how rough the sea on the Algarve can be even in July and August - it aint the Med! It can be fearsome! I found out from experience! As previously stated somewhere, I was completely thrown off my feet in Praia da Rocha two or three years ago by a wave that didnt even seem that bad, embarrassingly for my 15 year old son at the time I lost me bikini top!! Anyway, I was pretty shaken by it to be honest and am wary now! The shore at Albufeira shelves steeply, one minute you are up to your knees, the next gone!!

I gotta say though, looking at at your first picture the beach looks narrower than in previous years?  It might just be an illusion created by your camera/lens combination though.

It's the Praia do Inatel - you can see the white Inatel building in the centre of the picture with the pier and old town beyond.

I think the actual bit of beach I was standing on is called Praia do Forte de Sao Joao or something like that. Behind me is the set of steps you climb up to go round the cliff to Aveiros beach.

Cubsur, your picture above has prompted me to ask you or anybody else that knows, how far you can walk from Inatel along the beach heading eastwards. Can you get to Oura and beyond or do you have to,at some point, come up the cliff/steps for a while. If so where would you say you have to leave the beach?

You can walk as far as Olhos D'Agua for sure at low tide. I have done that in the reverse direction. There is no marked footpath but it is pretty obvious. The going is possiblly a bit difficult in a couple of places scrambling up rocks etc.

As far as Oura it's mostly along clifftop paths.

Beyond Oura going east, there is one short section where you can only stay at beach level at the lowest point of the tide otherwise it's up and over the cliff to the next beach and and as far as Olhos D' Agua. Then there is another awkward section which would involve a very long inland detour if the sea is high and you get to the next beach which is Praia do Falesia. Walk along that and you eventually brings you to the footbridge across the river and Vilamoura.

Hi Rodger, the photo shows 3 beaches, the first in the foreground is Peneco and on the other side of the rock/cliff sticking out on the left is Fishermens beach. The old town is just behind. In the distance on the other side of the pier is Inatel beach.

Hi RogerD,

The beach you see here ends at Praia do Forte Soa Joao, close to the Aura Mar Beach Club.  Wink

There is a rocky section (headland) behind the Aura Mar and a small beach called 'Praia dos Aveiros'. Then another rocky section and the start of Praia Da Oura. See it on the interactive beach guide at this link - http://www.albufeira.com/beach/guide/default.asp - http://www.albufeira.com/beach/guide/default.asp

The distance from the end of the beach in the photo to Praia Da Oura is only a few hundred meters as the crow flyes.  You can walk over the headland - a bit dicy in places.  By road it would be about a mile or so.

Hi Roger,

Yes. Its a lovely spot. There is a path that leads around the side of the Aura Mar and it brings you directly to Praia do Forte Sao Joao.  Its only a 2 or 3 mimute walk and about 25 steps down to the beach.

I think that there is also direct access from the Aura Mar to Praia dos Aveiros.  Probably more steps though I would think as the hotel is built right on the headland.

Enjoy.

I observe that the rock pinnacle on Albufeira's main beach has been fenced off with some proper posts etc. Undoubtedly in response to recent events, it now provides a very handy long clothes-line for the sunseekers.

Yeah, they put it up last thursday night, quite a surprise to see it there as me and Mrs Wal wandered down the zig-zags on friday morning.
Personally I don't think the boundary is big enough, looking at the large cracks and rock structure plus the rate it's erroding at (I'm no expert by the way) I would have thought they would have made the 'safety zone' somewhat larger.  It might give people protection from smaller lumps of rock dropping off but that large slab on the western side is looking decidedly top heavy and very dodgy IMO; if that collapsed it would squash a few folk outside of the rope Dead.  About 8 years ago I remember noticing the foot holes that had been carved into the eastern side of the pinnacle, they were quite well defined and climable - last week there are barely noticable, so it's erroding quite quickly.

Anyway, twas another great week at good ole Albufeira, can't wait now until next year Smile

Yes, there were a few bodyboarders out there by the pier, half a dozen blokes rather optimistically fishing and even a couple of kids digging in the sand. It was a bit windy though. I didn't stay long, pressing appointment with a bar and a couple of football matches.

can you recommend any good beachfront walks from CPO with our pushchair?

Posted By: cubsur

Desmond - my picture (and Sydnie's a couple of posts back) is the the main beach of Albufeira old town. You can see the pier. There is an escalator at that end (from near the bus stops down into town) and a lift near the rock pinnacle at the other, Boavista end.

Of course there are no deckchairs etc at this time of year but it has been warm enough for adults and kids to enjoy the walk and digging around respectively.

You cannot walk along the beach from CPO except for a short distance (maybe 200 yards) along the Oura beach onto which CPO joins. The various small beaches are separated by cliffs and the only path is one that goats would find difficult in places.

In the old town area you can walk several hundred yards along the beaches when the tide is out. However at this time of year the sea comes right up to the base of the cliffs along several stretches and it can be a bit rough.

Hi desmond, we usually stay at the CPO and you can walk in the opposite direction towards St Eulalia beach for quite a distance, I'm not sure if you can walk all the way to St Eulalia in the mornings when the tide is out, it's years since we tried and we had to do a fair bit of climbing because the tide was in but I'm sure someone on here will known,

Posted By: cubsur

You can walk round from CPO to Sta Eulalia in fact even as far as Olhos D'Agua at shore level but only when the tide is fully out  and certainly not at this time of year. I have done this, both ways, and it is a bit of a scramble from time to time over wet rocks even at low tide. You don't have much of a window between tides, so it's important to be aware of the state of the sea.

The cliff path is very iffy on that stretch and there are some very narrow bits and some very steep slopes. I haevn't been over there since the summer and it is highly likely that the winter will bring more erosion to the area, which is little fragile.

I didn't see anyone using the lift in the 15 minutes or so I was there but neither did I see a sign saying 'lift closed' so I guess it's just a matter of common sense i.e. don't use the lift if the sea is breaking over the path and covering the beach.

It's Ok in summer when the tides are not so high.

mwhittles, if you go to the albufeira.com home page and click on the beach giude tab and then the interactive beach guide you can view all the beaches in the Albufeira area. You should have a look at Praia da Oura which is the closest to you.
The original photo above is Praia do Peneco, old town area.

Something I noticed yesterday - no picture sorry. A lot of cliffs east of Inatel have had the loose material scraped away. It doesn't do much for the appearance but has improved safety no doubt. However as a result there are a lot of small rocks and pebbles along the beach, the sort you stub your toe on.  Please be careful and warn your kids if they are likely to to jumping and diving in the water at high tide when they will be hidden.

Thanks cubsur.  Always appreciated.

I noticed that the beaches at Oura and the old town appear to be fairly clear of stones.  However, from Inatel eastwards, the beach has lots of stones.  By any chance does anybody know if the Camara organised a clean-out of certain beaches - and not others.

Or is it just the tide and changed currents (since the marina breakwaters were built, I assume the currents could have forced changes)?

Perhaps the scraping of the cliffs contributed significantly?

I thought that the Camara had arranged for delivery of extra sand for this summer.  Was this done?

I suppose one decent storm can wash away lots of sand and introduce plenty of stones!

So far as I can tell, the combined effects of the winter storms and the scraping of the cliiffs have resulted in considerably more stones being seen. I had the impression that the general level of sand is lower than last year, but experience tells us that the sand comes back during summer when the seas are quieter.

Yes, one decent storm can move all the sand. I have a picture somewhere I took near the pier after a particualarly bad storm and there is no sand at all all the way to Inatel.

I don't know if anyone has ever investigated the changes in the currents since the Marina was built, but the strong flow that surges in and out with each tide must surely have affected the currents in the surrounding area.

The extra sand for the beach has not happened yet, which is probably fortuitous as it would have all gone. I don't know if this is still planned but it's  a bit late now the beaches are busy once more.

Well, yesterday afternoon at about 5.30. There were some fairly big rocks visible as the tide was low, near the bit where the cliff juts out and where the river tunnel can be seen. Be careful jumping into the sea.

That's really really strange! Sorry for the troubles you've had with your laptop. I just want to let you know it wasn't my meaning to cause this problem. I have changed the link of my homepage and it should be working now.

Thanks chiii, my lap top has windows vista which may be the problem. When I clicked onto your homepage (being a nosey so and so!!) it went straight to my facebook page but then it just kept repeating that page on top of another page and so on and I couldnt stop it. Eventually I had to take the battery out and then once up and running it wouldnt allow me back onto the forum saying something about enabling cookies!!! I'll try again tonight!
