The long derelict building by the church seems to be getting a makeover. Picture from Bob D.

I remember when the shop was 'Fat Franks' fish and chip shop, it's been empty for years, no one ever took it over, I think he moved somewhere beside Turial park, but that's been long gone as well.

That must have been a long time ago. I only remember it in its current state. Next time I walk past, probably Tuesday, I will see if I can get a look at what it is to become.

I think it was about 25-28 years ago when it closed, we started to come here about 30 years ago and it always seemed quite popular.

There's no planning notice or anything I can see to show what is happening, but large piles of sand and gravel are now outside.

Thanks Cubsor, at least it looks like something is going happen. It's been an eyesore for a long time. Maybe whatever it's going to be, will be finished when we go in September.

Some serious work going on. No sign of what it is to become though.

Thanks Cubsor, I have been searching through the hundreds of photos we have from when we first visited about 30 years ago. The first time we stayed in Albufeira was a place called Mar Alto which their huge balconies overlooked the square/church. Up until now I have only found a night time photo of the church, but on the left hand side you can see the green neon light of the fish shop, unfortunately you would only recognise it if you knew it was already there. I will keep looking because I must have a day time photo of the church which may show the shop.

Good stuff. Please post it if you can find it. I had a quick look through some of the old photos I have but nothing has any detail.

At least the new door is making a difference, I wonder if the double fronted area will be kept as a business? Looking forward to see the progress.

Strange, that door. There was a light on behind it last night.

I have a good look at the old stuff but I cannot see anything conclusive about what might have been there before. The outline of the old stonework and the building next door is vaguely suggesting a tall building, maybe a tower. But it is outside the walled area of the original town.

This is the best I can do from one of the old pictures and present day Google Maps. In the old picture the next door building is taller with a different shape roof and there are I think trees behind it, a hint of a walled garden of which there are still some in the area.

Hi Cubsor, thanks for these photos, I think the building was more to the left of the church, looking at it straight on, could be wrong of course. I shall also keep looking through my collection of photos to see if I have anything which would prove Fat Frank's Fryer did actually exist! If I come across anything I will definitely post.

Ryton Tyne,

Cubsur’s photo is of the townhouse that’s been demolished, not the building you referred to which is indeed to the left of the church and in the photos on the previous page.

Bob d

Sorry my mistake, I didn't realise it was the demolished building Cubsor was pointing out.
