They changed some of the games for Monday which I failed to spot earlier
Monday's revised fixtures : In Albufeira : Iceland v Netherlands ko 1540hrs then Australia v China at 1900 In Lagos : Korea v Canada at 1500 In Parchal : Sweden v Russia 1500 in Algarve Stadium : Japan v Denmark 1540 and Portugal v Norway 1900 Day two results Group A Portugal 0-0 Australia China PR 0 – 2 Norway Group B Russia 0 – 1 Canada Sweden 1 – 1 Korea Republic Group C Japan 2 – 1 Iceland Denmark 2 – 3 Netherlands Netherlands are the only team to have won both games, so there is plenty to play for in Monday's final round of games. Went to Japan v Iceland yesterday. Japan were the usual busy and efficient selves, Iceland were pretty poor. If Japan's finishing had been better, they could have had two or three more. Iceland's only goal was a close range hit following probably the only mistake Japan's defence made, failing to react quickly enough when a corner actually went wrong and the ball fell into space. The game was livened up by one heavy shower and it was very windy throughout. The pitch was in very good condition, considering the amount of rain and that two games were played there on Wednesday. Pictures - Iceland in blue. |

Good game yesterday afternoon in Albufeira between Iceland and Netherlands, watched by a crowd of several hundred, mostly Dutch. Iceland were much better thn what we saw on Friday. Although Netherlands had most of the ball, they could not get past a resolute Icelandic defence. They did hit the post late on, but before that had wasted chance after chance. Too many players opted for yet another pass when a shot would have been a better idea. Not a bad game overall despite the 0-0 score and certainly worth the free admission.
I shall be there for Portugal v Australia tomorrow. Note that this year the final is in Parchal and not the Algarve Stadium, as has been the case recently. |

Portugal 2 - 1 Australia yesterday in Albufeira. Played in horrible wet and windy conditions. Portugal therefore finished third, their best ever performance in this competition. Short highlights on YouTube at https://youtu.be/oSTwMPjKB20
Portugal are not as technically proficient as the other teams we watched but there is no doubting their enthusiasm. The second half was a lot better than the first, with both teams going for a winner. Portugal's half time sub Jessica Silva, number 20 in the video, made a big difference and the Australians were unable to deal with her speed. A crowd of about 200 braved the foul conditions. The final, due to be played at Parchal, was cancelled as was the Korea v Norway game at Albufeira. The results of the games that did go ahead : Canada 2 -0 Japan Iceland 1 - 1 Denmark Iceland won 5-4 on penalties China 2 - 1 Russia |
