Yesterday Culatrense 2 - 0 Imortal

I was unable to go, my own skills being required on the bowling green at Alvor. We lost too, big time!

That was Imortal's first defeat in 15 league matches. That and other results leaves them in fifth place, but now only a couple of points above the dotted line. Next Saturday has a trip to Lagoa, a game that needs to be won if the gap is not to shrink to worrying proportions.

Yesterday Lagoa 3 - 0 Imortal, bad result. Once again I was unable to go, fortunately by the look of it, as I was playing right over in Cabanas. We lost again too!

Next Saturday Imortal host undefeated league leaders Moncarapchense.

Imortal 1 - 0 Moncarapachense

A most welcome result and much needed three points against league leaders Moncarapachense, unbeaten in their previous 18 league matches.  The visitors did not look at all like the team on top of the league and managed not a single shot on target .

But, other results mean that Imortal are still in sixth place with three games to go until the halfway split. The table below shows the situation. Imortal's remaining games in the first phase are Ferreiras away next week, then at home to Almancilense and Lusitano.

There was a good crowd in the sunshine at the Municipal Stadium. Most well enjoyed the only goal in the game, scored by Imortal's captain Pedro Rodrigues after 25 minutes. A very good corner was swung in from the right by Umaro Baldé and met with a stooping header from close to the far post, directed across the goal beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner. Great were the celebrations of Imortal's first goal in three games.

Imortal had started well, forcing four corners in the opening minutes. Bruno Pereira, an old fashioned type of centre forward, was instrumental in the good start and made a nuisance of himself for 80 minutes until subbed. He has been out of favour for much of the season, but showed his good side on Saturday. A couple of early chances went begging, Imortal then had to defend well after going in front. There was a scare when a deflected shot pinged against a goalpost before being cleared but Imortal's goalkeeper Nélio Pereira had nothing really to do except catch misdirected crosses. Imortal should have increased their lead in first half added time, but when Ramos and Bruno Pereira suddenly found themselves in the clear with the goalkeeper stranded, panic mode set in with Ramos' cross poorly directed giving Pereira no chance of getting his toe onto it.

As is often the case, Imortal began the second half very tentatively, keeping the ball too long and then losing it. That gave Moncarapachense a good early chance to level things but Dembelé inexplicably headed wide of a open goal.

Ramos had another scoring opportunity, but he had to shoot from a very narrow angle and it went hard across the goaland out for a throw. Moncarapachense were then reduced to ten men, a second yellow being shown to someone we could not identify.

The visitors continued to attack and it took two good saving tackles by Rodrigues to save the day. The final quatrer hour had Moncarapchense trying to find a way through and Imortal sitting back a bit, but absorbing the pressure.

Ramos had another good break down the left in a counter-attack, but there was no-one there to met his cross. Pereira had been subbed after receiving a yellow card, the coach sensibly deciding that his services would be required next week! One of Moncarapachense's non playing subs did manage to get himself sent off presumably for something said, although the ref must have good ears as he was a good 50 metres away.

Moncarapachense did create one more chance from a free kick ,but the ball missed everything and everyone, including Nélio's hands, as it sped across the crowded goalmouth.

Six minutes added time were announced. Imortal faced no further threats. The teams went off, Imortal to applause from their fans and finger pointing from the visitors players.

All being well some video highlights will appear on the Imortal Fans Facebook page. I will flag them up when I see them available.

Next Saturday Imortal travel the short distance up the road to Ferreiras with both teams wanting three points for different reasons.

Ferreiras 0 - 0 Imortal

A typical local derby, no shortage of running around, lots of minor fouls and neither goalkeeper seriously tested. Ferreiras had more of the ball, putting Imortal on the back foot especially in the second half.  Shooting practice is seriously needed by both teams, Imortal especially having scored only three times in their last six matches.

A couple of chances went to Ferreiras striker Nasir, the first went wide and the second was foiled by Imortal's 'keeper Nélio Pereira making a fine low down catch at the striker's feet. Nasir was offside anyway, but the collision caused words to be had between the two.

Ferreiras began the second half the better team, a snap free kick went just wide of the Imortal goal. But soon the passing became wayward and the shooting worse, amid groans from the home fans among a good crowd of around 250.  A quarter of an hour into the second half Imortal's striker Bruno Pereira, who again was good value , badly mis-timed a shot and struck only air. Nélio finally had a save to make on the half hour, a routine fingertip save down at the foot of the goalpost. Pereira was again off target late in the game, followed by a truly horrible free kick taken by Umaro Baldé which sailed over the wall behind the goal and many metres into the car park. In the last seconds, Nélio had one had one his moments, mistiming a punched clearance, but the rebound also went miles over.

Imortal's last two games in the first phase will both be at home, Almancil next Saturday then bottom club Lusitano VRSA the week after. With wins for others, Imortal are now down to 8th place, but only two points separate 5th from 8th. As for Ferreiras they are now six league games without a win, five of which were drawn and they are fourth, eight points adrift of the top spot.

Match stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 20 (15 in the second half), Ferreiras 10
Offside : Imortal 6, Ferreiras 3
Shots on target : Imortal 0 Ferreiras 4, all but one were very soft efforts
Shots off target : Imortal 5, Ferreiras 8
Shots blocked : Imortal 2, Ferreiras 1
Corners : Imortal 5, Ferreiras 4
Yellow cards Imortal 1, Ferreiras 2 the ref was fairly lenient.

IMORTAL ALBUFEIRA 5 - 1  ALMANCIL

An important win for Imortal in which they scored as many goals as in the previous nine matches combined. But the other results mean that Imortal, to finish in the top six, will need to win the final game of the first phase next week and hope that either Lagoa or the 11 Esperanças drop points. All three sides have 33 points with Imortal (7th) having the worst current situation. (There is a complex system of dividing teams on the same number of points which will be described below.)

The form-book is in Imortal's favour. They will be home to bottom side Lusitano VRSA (Saturday 7th March, 1500hrs / 3pm)  while Lagoa visit top side Moncarapachense. The 11 Esperanças will be hosting Louletano B, who are in second place.

The afternoon was one of heavy drizzle and a blustery wind. Players from both sides had problems keeping their feet and the ball. Imortal had a notable absentee in captain Pedro Rodrigues, he was replaced in defence by Canito. Elvis Odukporu was also unable to play.

Almancil have not had a good season, but surely they cannot have been as bad as in the first seven minutes of this encounter. Comical defending errors presented the ball to Mateus Vieira after three minutes, he scored unopposed from five metres out. Four minutes later a poor clearance fell to Umaro Baldé about 20 metres out to the left of goal. He controlled the ball well and unleashed a powerful low shot that found the opposite corner of the goal. There followed almost a half hour of nothing much, then Vieira escaped an attempted trip, stumbled, got to his feet and with no defender near scored from the edge of the penalty area to make it 3-0.

Imortal midfielder Lusinho had a good effort whack off a goalpost, then followed a mass protest after a foul, most of  Almancil's players were involved, that saw someone (their squad numbers are not on the website) receive two yellow cards in 15 seconds. Off he trudged. Almancil did get the ball in the net during first half added time (from a highly illegal corner, well outside the D) but it was ruled out for offside at the second touch. There were mild protests.

Imortal started the second half well, with two more goals in the opening 15 minutes. A good thing too, as most of the rest of the second period was a shambles. Defender Ricardo Calado headed the fourth from a corner via a scrum on the goal-line (more protest followed) then Vieira completed his hat-trick with a good header from close range.

Then ten men responded and, with Imortal's defenders on the back foot, wing back Samuel Ramos sped past them to slam in a low shot past Pereira. It was their only effort on target for the whole game, Pereira had not a save to make.

Imortal then fell back into that deadly trap of too many passes inside their own half and then losing the ball too easily and conceding too many free kicks. A better team would have punished them, but luckily Almancil were unable.  There were a few more chances for Imortal as the game broke out of their half. Pelé headed a fairly simple looking chance wide of the goal, Vieira hit one straight at the goalkeeper.  Tidjane Baldé saw an effort parried by the goalkeeper, which then looped over his head onto the crossbar and out for a corner.

Mercifully the referee added only three minutes instead of an expected five, which Imortal saw out.

The situation in the table is that 11 Esperanças, Lagoa and Imortal all have 33 points. The system here for dividing teams on the same points is :

1. The team that has gained the most points in games between them.

Lagoa v Imortal - 4 points to Lagoa, so they would finish above Imortal unless Imortal won and they did not;
Lagoa v 11 Esperanças also 4 points to Lagoa, ditto outcome;
Imortal v 11 Esperanças 3 points apiece and both games were 1-0 so item two  comes into play.

2. Goal difference in the games between them. In the case of Imortal v 11 Esperanças, both were 1-0 so we move to (3)

3. Goal difference over all games. Imortal are +10, 11 Esperanças +11 so if both won or drew next week, 11 Esperanças would finish above Imortal.

The following 'tie breaks' are also available further down the line :

4. Most wins in the season
5. Most goals scored in the season
6. Fewest goals conceded in the season.

In the highly unlikely event of all that being unable to separate two teams, there is provision for a one-off 'winner takes all' match on a neutral ground. This would only be used if a promotion or relegation issue was involved.

Match stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 21, Almancil 7 (they didn't get near us!)
Offside : Imortal 0, Almancil 2
Shots on target : Imortal 7, Almancil 1
Shots off target : Imortal 7, Almancil 4
Shots blocked : Imortal 5, Almancil 1
Corners : Imortal 5, Almancil 3
Yellow Cards : Imortal 2, Almancil 2
Red cards : Almancil 1, two yellows for the same player as described

Today

Imortal 1 - 0 Lusitano VRSA not the best of games and it was a late winner for Imortal. The other results went our way, so Imortal finish 5th at the end of the first phase and therefore play in the top half when the League resumes. Report tomorrow.

IMORTAL 1 - 0 LUSITANO VRSA

Definitely not  a game to enthuse about, a narrow win against the bottom team. The goal didn't come until the 90th minute after much frustration.  But as the other results were already in favour of Imortal, the win was a bonus in one sense.  Imortal finished 5th in the first phase. The league now splits into two groups for a second round of ten matches which I assume will begin on Saturday 21st March. Imortal won't win the league, but at least will get to play the better teams.

Man of the match was Lusitano's goalkeeper Muhammed Drammeh. He made three really good saves from well taken free kicks, twice denying Bruno Pereira and when duties changed, Marcio Ramos saw one tipped around the post.

Imortal's keeper Nélio Pereira also had to make two good saves behind at times an uncertain defence, lacking captain Pedro Rodrigues for the second week running.

Imortal were poor in the first half, managing only one shot on target, Bruno's first free kick effort. At times Lusitano looked the better organised side, cheered on by around 20 of their fans who had made the long trip. Good job for Imortal that their shooting was way off target. Imortal did manage to finish the half on top. After the free kick effort, a great run down the right by Tidjane Baldé set up Mateus Vieira unmarked in front of goal, but he slipped at the vital moment.

Imortal started the second half in the same mode, Bruno's second free kick attempt was saved. The visitors were sitting back, defence became robust and both teams were busily engaged in tit-for-tat petty fouls. Defender Ricardo Calado nearly put Imortal ahead , but his header hit the crossbar and bounced away to safety.  Imortal had all the ball now but couldn't string a decent move together. It was the routine of six passes in midfield, when something more direct could have unlocked the eight man defence. Bruno Pereira had a thunderous shot from 20 yards painfully blocked and with ten minutes left it looked like a goal would never come. There was some comfort in the fact that the other two contenders for finishing 7th were, by then, both losing by two goals, but the performance was lacking.

A melée involving all 22 players livened up the final few minutes, a yellow card for a wild hack at Imortal's midfielder Flavinho was deemed insufficient by his colleagues. The referee had been fairly lenient throughout, not caring in the least that almost every throw and free kick was taken at least ten metres further forward than it should have been. He did though award a foul throw against the visitors after a third warning, something you rarely see. And I wasn't aware of the rule change that allows goalkeepers to handle the ball outside the penalty area providing their feet are inside it. This happened possibly three or four times and once really clearly.

Then, in the final minute of the 90, a neat bit of control by Tidjane Baldé in the right wing corner, a short pass behind the defender found Chico, whose first time cross was side-footed in by Ramos at the far post. Cue despair and unbridled joy according to who you were with.

The referee announced only four minutes of added time, which Imortal played out carefully.

Match Stats :

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 18, Lusitano VRSA 19 almost all of which were highly unnecessary
Offside : Imortal 0, Lusitano VRSA 2
Shots on target : Imortal 4, Lusitano  VRSA 2
Shots off target : Imortal 1, Lusitano VRSA  7
Shots blocked : Imortal 1, Lusitano VRSA  1
Corners : Imortal 5, Lusitano VRSA 0
Yellow cards : Imortal 1, Lusitano VRSA 3

Final first phase table at https://www.foradejogo.net/championship.php?championship=20201542601

In case you are wondering, Lagoa finish above 11 Esperanças by virtue of their better record in the two games between them.

Great signal for the game back here in gloomy Gtr Manchester too. Tight game, well contested and without a single bout of handbags. Weather looks a bit wintery over there.
Sounded like 'behind closed doors' might have been wishful thinking by the authority however.

There was indeed a lot of noise for a game supposedly without spectators. Rather like the Tonbridge game last week, a lot of people probably found some official reason to be there! We did have some heavy showers during the early morning, lots of dark clouds later but no more rain. Temperature was around 22º, there is a warm air flow coming from the south.

It was a decent game with chances at both ends, with the visitors missing one excellent close range opportunity not long before Imortal's goal. Imortal's defence looked fairly solid for the most part.

League fixtures now up at http://www.algarvebus.info/imortal.htm

The first game on 29th August is currrently down as a 5pm kickoff but I will confirm that nearer the time. Because of promotion, Imortal will normally be playing on Sundays, not Saturdays.

It's an away game in the FA Cup on 12th September, up in a little town north of Beja called Vidigueira.
