"Is there a preservation order on the front facade?"

There must be or it would have been flattened by now. I have yet to discover what exactly is planned for the site.

The steel frame is to support the front wall of the building, while the rest of it is demolished,& rebuilt onto the existing frontage.

The back is open and also the workmen had obligingly left the 'front door' open so I was able to get sight of the interior. Some serious beams and arches which will probably have to be left in situ.

I didn't actually go inside. As you say, it looks unsafe even to the untrained eye.

Well before my time, at least 20 years. The first post on this thread is from 2008 and it was in a pretty poor state then. Early posts suggest it may have been empty for much longer. The tale is long and convoluted, that I do recall.

Earlier, there were operatives with a jack hammer taking down an internal wall. It looked to be about two feet thick. Some of the large stones were being carefully stacked, so I guess they have a resale value.

Earlier today : vast amounts of mainly pulverised stone dust being taken away. The skip was full. The view from the back shows the extent of the demolition. There must be some kind of rebuilding coming. They have had a delivery of steel reinforcing bars.

You can't quite see it in this picture, but where the old stuff is being removed the back walls are being shored up with modern bricks.
