Beyond the wit of journalists to understand the UKs inconvenient (for Westminster) devolved system of government. There's no such thing as "the UK" in quarantine matters. Each devolved administration will measure the Portuguese infection rate against its own, thank the lord. Nothing Boris Bunter can do about that unless he dissolves devolution, which Westminster could do. He has a good majority. This, of course, would be a gift to the nationalists and for those in favour of independence.

Your country, your choice. Just wait for the flu season later this year. The problem is going to be separating flu from Covid sufferers as the syptoms are similar.

Then after the 'flu will come the next virus sent from the Far East. Buy shares in the companies making masks and disinfectant. Wearing masks and disinfectant will become permanent measures to protect the 1% of he population who are extra vulnerable to the nasties. Now the Black Death, that was a proper epidemic.

Around 18% of UK population are over 60 ... might have gone down a tad recently .. and the
travel risk for them to Portugal is significant because they are much more sensitive to heart and lung disorders .. its a catch-22 virus ..

Don't go out, ever. On a brighter note,I can tell you that more and places are opening for business including Mama Mia 2 up here in Páteo. Down in town the Geordie Viking opened on Thursday, amid dark mutterings from its competitors as to how they have suddenly come by a snack bar licence. Also open is the big tourist restaurant Bank.

Carlos will be pleased. And he won't have to argue with the bar next door about their customers sitting on his outdoor seats. Or pinching his glasses. What a lark!

found this in sicnoticias.pt
From August 1, Portugal's nightclubs and bars allowed to reopen, but without dancefloors The Portuguese government announced on Thursday that bars and nightclubs can reopen if they wish, but following the same rules applied to coffee shops and bakeries. They will have to shut by 8 p.m. in Lisbon and 1 a.m. elsewhere in the country. Nightclubs, which were forced to close doors in March when a lockdown to fight the coronavirus was imposed, can use the dancefloor space for tables where people can hang out and grab a bite – as long as social distancing is respected. “There is a possibility for establishments like bars to operate like bakeries or cafes,” Cabinet Affairs Minister Mariana Vieira da Silva told a news conference, saying there were still “no conditions” for the establishments to return to business as usual due to the high risk of contagion. Worried about the future of the sector and the industry’s capacity to maintain jobs, business owners were not happy with the decision. “This cannot be true,” Hugo Cardoso, the president of an association representing nightclubs and bars nationwide, told radio station Renancenca. “A nightclub that closes at 8 p.m.? A nightclub that closes before people arrive?” Antonio Fonseca, the president of a similar association in Porto, Portugal’s second biggest city, told Portuguese broadcaster RTP the government move was “ridiculous.” “It doesn’t make any sense,” he said. Portugal initially won praise for its quick response to the pandemic, but a steady count of several hundred new cases per day in and around Lisbon in the past two months has worried authorities at home and abroad. Authorities said the number of cases in the affected areas have dropped, leading the government to downgrade a state of “calamity” across a total of 19 civil parishes around Lisbon to a category of “contingency,” the same level as the rest of the city’s metropolitan area. https://sicnoticias.pt/especiais/coronavirus/2020-07-30-Bares-e-discotecas-podem-funcionar-como-cafes-e-pastelarias-a-partir-de-sabado?fbclid=IwAR0CWVmsnvXW1zs3n4ntEa6H0-yuhC82FOJ6YsfeFO6fPrt4wr-pv3E44B4

Personally I think opening nightclubs could totally write off the summer season for everyone else following the inevitable surge in virus transmissions. Surely it would be better for the Government to compensate these Clubs if it means the rest of the Country can remain open to tourists.

Just when I am off for three weeks. No, not the plague pit otherwise known as the United Kingdom. I hope the bars will still be open when I get back. Currently sitting in Lisbon airport. This morning's experience was almost pleasant. Entered checkin queue when it opened at 0945 and through that and security in 15 minutes. One thing I have noticed in Lisbon is that there are far more people wearing masks in the street than in Albufeira. At a guess I would say around 50%. The supermarket bore a notice that no alcohol will be sold after 2000hrs, in line with local laws. The metro to the airport was barely half full.

Shame on you to refer to the uk in the way you have, we are in the midst of a global pandemic and who knows where it’s going to spike next. Let’s hope you have a safe break and Albufeira does not spike whilst you are away.
