The old vaguely amber coloured street lights have been being replaced here over the last few years. I find them much betterand so far have been reliable. They are also designed to direct all the ight downwards.  Maybe in years to come we'll see the stars once more.

I hope they work better than those in Parque Alfrobeirra (near the bus station). A couple of years ago they replaced the bulbs with LED but last winter over half had failed. The council is spending some €675,000 on replacing the old streetlights with modern LED equipment. They reckon to get the money back in about five years because of lower electricity bills and reduced maintenance.

So far, 955 new lights have been installed. A contract has been signed for the next stage, replacement of 2500 lights along the main Avenida across town.

The complete plan will require the installation of 6200 lighting columns all over town and the more rural areas in partnership with EDP.

I have the full document from the council, in Portuguese, explaining what they are doing. In a nutshell, most of the roads outlined in red will be getting block pavements and/or parking. The main Strip, from top to bottom, will be pedestrianised so level road and pavement in blocks with access for buses, emergency and residents/deliveries. Several options exist for the junction of the Strip and the dual carriageway - a tunnel for cars, a bridge, a viaduct or a roundabout. 
Work due to start at North end around December this year.

In the item is a link to another post that describes how IMI (and other taxes, possibly including car tax!) can be paid by Direct Debit.    I never knew/didn't think this was possible, so may be new. Any way , a great find and for many should/will avoid the added stress of remembering when payments are due / the risk of late payment penalties!

Now just need to follow the helpful guide!.....

Payment is indeed now due in May - see https://contaspoupanca.pt/2019/01/01/2019-imi-comeca-a-ser-pago-em-maio/

Also IMI of between €100 and €500 can now be paid in two instalments, more than €500 can be made in three. And for the first time by direct debit.
