A leasehold doesn't exist in Portugal law.

There is something called a "horizontal freehold", which is similar, but just describes how much of the whole apartment block you own...

Under the system of “horizontal property”, residential units are sold withabsolute title (i.e. freehold). This system applies to apartments that are builtas independent units with a separate entrance, and townhouses and similarsemi-detached properties may also opt for this system of ownership.

I have never come across the concept of leasehold for a residential block. You either rent from the owner or buy outright. In the latter case, condominium charges and the equivalent to council tax will be charged to you.

I'm sure this will give many here a BIG smile at a Newbie's ignorance, but here goes... -
Is there a Portuguese equivalent to the UK Lease or Leasehold system to consider in buying a normal residental apartment in a 100% residential block?
It's a normal block, built under 20 years ago - the lawyer has asked me what I mean by my question. I can't find anything by search;- but any knowledge or experiences anyone?
