If you are coming on vacation or on a business trip to Albufeira without your own vehicle you will necessarily need to use the local transportations to move around and discover part of the surroundings.
Below we describe the existing possibilities to travel within the Algarve in a practical, safe and affordable way during your stay in Albufeira
Faro International Ariport
Faro is currently the main tourist airport in Portugal. With its modern and functional infrastructure, Faro Airport provides high quality services for the Algarve and the Spanish province of Huelva.
Situated 4 km from the Algarvean Capital and 35 km East of Albufeira, Faro Airport is today a modern, functional infrastructure that receive millions of tourists each year.
The Faro Airport has all the modern and common facilities. There are eateries and bars either before and after your check-in. Banking facilities are also present with foreign exchange booths and ATMs. The Algarve tourist board and a post-office are at your disposal near the arrival area and all the major international and several local car hire companies have offices at the airport and are gathered outside the airport on the right when you exit the baggage claim area.

There are several private agencies supplying this kind of service in the Algarve. These professionals offer a practical and affordable alternative particularly for small groups of people or family traveling with a lot of luggages.
Car Rental Companies
There are many different car hire agencies around the city, international brands and local companies with very competitive offers. This is probably the best way to see the Algarve, as long as you have the help of a good road map.
Regional and Local Buses
EVA is a regional transport network with a central station inside the city and does daily trips and express services within the Algarve region and the rest of the country, and also to Spain (Seville).
"Transrápido" (TR) line - Direct bus line running across the Algarve from Lagos to Albufeira and from Albufeira to Faro and up to Vila Real de Stº António (Spanish border).
In case you wish to travel from Faro airport to Albufeira, you will first need to catch the local urban bus (no. 14 or 16) to Faro bus terminal and from there get on the next bus to Albufeira bus terminal (at Caliços).

There is an urban transport circuit available in Albufeira city which is composed of five lines (Green, Blue, Red 1 & 2 and Orange) with 168 stops and links the town centre to the Marina area, the camping zone, the areas of Montechoro, Santa Eulália, Oura, Ferreiras, Train station, etc…

Trains (CP - Portuguese Railways)
The train service goes through the Algarve, from Lagos until Vila Real de Santo António with a changeover point in Tunes for Lisbon. Trains are fairly modern and have air conditioning.
Albufeira railway station is located in Ferreiras (about 5km north of Albufeira town) and can be reached by either Giro bus or taxi.
Faro railway station is located inside town, near the Marina and is over 6km east of Faro Airport which is reachable by local urban bus (no. 14 e 16) or taxi of course.

Taxis in Portugal are relatively cheap and are quick and safe. In fact it comes out cheaper for 3 or 4 persons than the bus in many cases. Taxi cabs are easily recognizable for their colors are either light beige or black with a green top.
The local Taxi company (Rádio Taxi de Albufeira) has more than 100 cabs and over 20 ranks at various central points across Albufeira area. It is possible to order a Taxi by telephone from any hotel and most public places. Be aware that during high season long queues are commons at the most popular places in Albufeira like in the Old town and around the Strip / Oura area, mostly at night.
Minimum fare is 3,25€ from up to a 3km distance.
Trips further than 3 km are charged 0,90 € /km and added a 20% increase after 9pm or on week-ends and holidays.
Calling a taxi by phone will add 0,80 € to the total fare.
Luggage are an extra 1,60 €.
Animals are accepted if in cage or properly held and will be charged as an extra luggage.
If you pretend a two way trip you shall have to tell the driver when entering the taxi.

Albufeira Tourist Train
Also existing in Albufeira is a tourist train (called "Turistrem") circling the town. It only has four stops but their locations make it a practical and pleasant way of going around the city.
