Great clarity and detail in this pic but hey, what's that I can see right on the horizon, right up top... gives me a great idea for a name for that area!

That's it JJ, and how about that, you had the same thought as me, 'windmill hill', might go and suggest that to the CAMRA!

I can confirm that Windmillhill is indeed "Right up top" High up, as far as you can go up, up up up, onward and upward.......................

Now I've got something to go digging for, I love queries like this.
I reckon the left one is likely the still existing one atop what we know today as windmill hill, anyone confirm? The right one would then be near dolphins roundabout or Pateo area I guess? Anyone? I'll keep a keen eye on other pics as they come to light to see if we can find anymore on this. |

Just looking again at the pic, there's a very large property, on the horizon, to the right of the second windmill, what would that be, is it still there? I need to sort bearings I think, my current thoughts are that it is situated about where Oceanview currently is.

You might be right about the large property. Many moons ago when I came here on holiday I stayed at Jardim 2 opposite what is now Oceanville. The hill was much taller and on top was a ruined farmhouse. Before Oceanville was built the top of the hill was scraped off and the area made much flatter. The current road up the hill from the Dolphins dates from the mid 70's I was told, so cuts through the landscape. The old road was the other side of Jardim 2. I will see if I can line up that photo with one of my shots from the roof. |

I 'm wrong perhaps. I can't find a shot of mine with that direct square
on view of the church but the tall building to the right is on the
location of Vila Recife.
I think the second structure, on the top of the hill roughly in the centre of the view, is the other windmill. This one I shall continue. |

Can't find an angle for that square on shot of the church. I reckon that present Oceanville will be on the extreme right of the picture where the hill starts to rise. The cutting for the road down to the marina would therefore be about an inch in as it were.
This whole area has been carved down and built over and comparison is really hard. I will try a bit more. |

I got the satellite image up and put the edge of a piece of paper along the side of the Church and it passed a shortish distance to the north-east of Alto do Moinho. So I think the left hand windmill in the photo is probably at Windmill Hill. But I've got this nagging feeling that our windmill was re-sited from its original position - but perhaps it was only by a few metres. May be wrong but I'll check it out next time we're there at the end of May.
