Phantom, in the area of north west UK where I come from, Spanish German French, Italian courses but no Portuguese, we have a big college in Manchester called Cervantes teaching Spanish, and apparently very popular. Our local college did Portuguese for beginners for about 3 years, now its been abandoned, obviously not enough pupils, so annoying.Living in Portugal is the best option to learn Big smile, if we only could.

Why is it that most colleges teach all sorts of languages yet none seem to learn mainland Portuguese? Shame and me and the OH would love to have lessons and learn the lingo properly - more than the bits and bobs we have picked up so far!

The course was held in Milton Keynes around 2004/5 - don't think the woman was called Sonia.
I hate how people compare Frank Zappa to God. I mean, he's cool and great and nice and everything, but he's no Zappa.

trying to think of the ladies name but it escapes me; had the same issues with her about the differences between Algarve Portuguese and her version of same.

When we first statred coming here we had Portuguese lesson in the UK for about 2 years - 2 hours, once a week.
The woman teaching us, a class of about 20, was Brazillian - not ideal as there's a big difference between Potuguese Portuguese & Brazillian Portuguese.

Anyway, we did ok, learnt quite a lot of everyday words, phrases, numbers etc - all basic the basic stuff even though we found it quite difficult.

I remember going into our local Portuguese butcher here in the Algarve and feeling so chuffed that I could at last ask for a large chicken in Portuguese

"Ola, Bom Dia. Uma grande frango por favor"
"Yes mate, which one do you want" came the reply

So that was it, didn't go to anymore lessons - thought whats's the point.

Still, what we did learn has come in quite handy, especially "fala ingles"

Hi,  been going to Albufeira twice a year for last four years and getting quite good at the language now ... it IS regular usage and attention to detail.

Buy a Dictionary and phrasebook ... read it at least three times. Pay special attention to the common things like numbers, days of the week, news items. I watch Hoje em Dia and Fala Portugal (news) on Sky 801, Segunda a sexta when home in UK .. also buy a map and look up the meaning of every Portuguese sign, district, hotel, instruction you come upon. very soon, you have a large vocabulary and begin to converse with locals ... like the cleaners, supermarklet staff, bus drivers, etc.

I am currently producing a Albufeira Guide, bus map and timetable ... ( I know there are some on the web) ... but which many people I`ve met from UK, Ireland have said they`d like in their pocket. Available from February in Albufeira ... or from my e-mail address.
