I have just heard on another forum that there will be a general strike on the 24th November which will affect a lot of services including flights. Tom do you know anything about this?

Only what I read in the papers. It's lead by the Public sector unions as usual, so it's certainly going to mean closures on trains, Lisbon and Porto metro, schools, government offices etc etc. Air Traffic Control is a question mark. Of course with no ATC, planes cannot fly.
But many others may be involved. There is a website http://www.grevegeral.net/ in which it states that the object of the strike is a total stoppage of all work from midnight to midnight in all areas, public and private sectors...across the whole country...etc etc. Whether this succeeds we shall not know until the day in question. Anyone planning to enter or leave Portugal on that day will have to rely on information provided by their airline. Once they get here of course, they will be in amongst it with the rest of us. This is the day (I think) that Parliament is due to debate the 2012 austerity budget. Needless to say, the populace is never going to support any government that raises taxes, reduces pensions and salaries and lays off thousands of people. It's going to get worse over the winter I feel sure. |

I read in another forum that Air Traffic Control has joined the strike on 24th November.
There is a statutory minimum service requirement but what that will mean in practice is anyone's guess. Anyone intending to travel in either direction on that day should consult their airline. |

Hi all
I read in www.travelweekly.co.uk that the Portuguese Civil Aviation Pilots Union announced last week an eight day strike scheduled for 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th December and 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th January 2012. I will be in Portugal for Christmas and New Year so will need to keep abreast of the situation as my return flight would be affected.

Just wondering if this would only effect TAP (Air Portugal) flights or have a knock on?

It is the pilots employed specifically by TAP that are planning to go on strike in December and January.
But don't rule out further strike action by other unions as the fight against government budgets continues. Also there is the effect of similar strikes in UK and elsewhere to deal with. |

Does anyone realise that there was a "general strike" last year on the 24th November? So I don't think that it is purely the austerity measures which they are striking for, seems it could be an annual event!!!

I've seen a couple of cars driving round with communist party flags and of course the kids are off school, but otherwise little effect otherwise around here. Buses are running normally, shops and bars are open
