Someone, somewhere still obviously hasn't grasped the reality of recession.
This is the Avenida da Liberdade this afternoon. They will have a nice view of the block opposite that has been empty and derelict for as long as I can remember. At street level in that block, the closed down Barracuda bar will add to the ambience. Just out of shot, a group of workmen were busy relaying the 'calcada' for the umpteenth time. |

Most of the appartments between there & the square are empty.
East of Faro they tend to refurbish old properties before building new,the villages look so much better for it. |

If you have the money and are willing to wait it out, it might not be such a bad idea to build now - you will be able to get land/buildings for renovation cheaper than you normally would, plus if the labour market is anything like in the UK right now, you will be able to get builders, electricians, labourers etc etc to work for a massive discount over normal rates. |

Your theory is very good Tyrion until you go looking these guys and then you find that it seems nobody has told them that we are in recession.

Maybe people here would rather not work at all than work for "less than they're worth". My uncle and sisters fiance (in central Scotland) are both working in the building trade for about 50% less than they were earning several years ago - they are complaining the economy and number of Poles taking jobs is driving the rates down to next to nothing. Nice if you're building a villa, not quite so nice if you're the one actually building it!

This is true and as we say, it seems that property developers have limitless amounts of money so they should run the government during these financial crises.
By the way, since I took that picture nearly 11 months ago, nothing has been built although there was a bit of digging going on this Sunday. |

In fairness, they were probably earning twice as much as everyone else a few years ago (I know some of my mates in the buliding trade were coining it in for years). So they are probably now in line with the rest...

I guess the council get have some kind of tax they levy on building projects, so are more than happy to boost their income by giving the go ahead for new schemes, however hare brained and badly timed they are?

I'm quite sure they are mad, especially building another golf course when IVA has increased on golf to 23%. Golf is expensive enough without this increase. I can see the golfing fraternity going back over the border to Spain where its cheaper. New hotels, well ain't there enough already, why build more when beds in others can't be filled, building on a loser comes to mind. I spoke to someone in November who was staying at a complex in St Eulalia and the hotel manager told them they had had to switch off all the corridor, walkway lights & electricity to apartments not being used in certain blocks because of the cost, but they still had to pay standing charges on electricity.

There has to be more than we are seeing... Pure commerce, supply and demand, If a moneyed person is willing to put their money into a hotel (or similar/equivalent) then we must, surely, accept there's a return?
I also agree.. The number of unfinished... The abandoned... Ho hum, I'm seeing both sides here I think, beer goggles off! Lol. All that apart, yep, can't believe the amount of development, new, defunct, finished, ongoing... It amazes me. |
