Returned from a 5 day break last night and though the weather was generally rubbish apart from Thursday, I was relieved to see it was busier than I expected. Even in the rain there were lots of people around which I didn't think there would be after reading the recent postings.
We flew out with EeasyJet and back with Monarch. EasyJet was great (as it usually is) Monarch served us with a 3.5 hour delay (which I have experienced before with them). The Captain said there was a problem with the toilets so the plane couldn't take off from Manchester which may have been true. However, just as we were about to start our descent into Manchester, the Captain announced that there was a problem with one of the engines and whilst it was of no worry to the passengers, we would be met with fire engines once we had landed. You can imagine how that went down. One lady near me was sobbing and everyone was very apprehensive for the remainder of the flight. We didn't actually see any fire engines but apparently they checked it out and everything was ok though the plane had to park quite a way from the terminal building. I checked the age of the Monarch fleet and they are pretty old planes in comparison to EasyJet and Ryanair. I have chosen them in the past because they have a good reputation and their planes always look well maintained. We said afterwards that maybe it would have been better not to be told anything as we didn't have a clue that anything was wrong and I have to say it has put me off flying with Monarch.

Had a similar experience on easyJet last November. Left Stansted on time & had been going for an hour & a half, so we were well over half way, when "the Captain announced that there was a problem with one of the engines". Can't say there was any panic but there was more than usual "toilet activty" ![]() So we turned round & went back to Stansted as there was no one in Faro who could fix it. When we landed we had what seemed like the entire Essex Fire Brigade following us down the runway, lights flashing & sirens ringing. Went back into the terminal, waited 4 hours before they could find a spare plane and eventually arrived in Faro 6 hours late. Good topic for a thread - your worst flight experience. I've had a few & a couple that can beat both of the above. |

I hate how people compare Frank Zappa to God. I mean, he's cool and great and nice and everything, but he's no Zappa.

That would have been worse for me, at least we were on our descent. I'm a nervous flyer so would have definitely panicked if we were well into the flight!

Wonder what the reaction will be when Avril reads this topic when she arrives home from her Norwegian Cruise on Sunday. She is not the happiest of flyers and recently went on a fear of flying course. I should imagine she will be doing plenty of elastic band twanging of the wrist which was one of the actions suggested on her course for nervous flyers.
I don't think I'll comment on my worst experience of flying as she will probably need smelling salts and a toilet nearby.

Shouldn't that be a "fear of crashing" course |

I worked in the Costa Brava 15yrs ago (god I cant believe it was that long ago) while i was there a Thompson plane crashed off the side of the runway during a heavy storm, no one was seriously injured but they left the plane at the side of the runway for over a year,
so you can picture it, your sitting on the plane, it taxis down the runway nice and smoothly, you feel the engines kick in, as the plane starts to speed up, you glance out of the window and see . . . a crashed plane . . . not the most comforting sight as the wheels leave the ground, I wasn't overly surprised when the tourist trade took a dip the following year :) |

I always thought that might be an urban myth DF! Glad you have been able to confirm it.
More chance of you winning the lottery than dying in a plane crash. We have a logical brain. |

My thoughts are that all involved were safe and will tell their tale. It's only natural.
It reminds me of being a passenger in a car that you have never been in before. The driver is in complete control and is experienced in driving that type of car. He/she knows what it is capable of and the options that one has when dealing with the unexpected. Jet planes are so well built these days that the most common problems are things like loo's that don't flush. Even when something more serious happens like an engine is giving a problem, it is just switched off and the plane flies on with the other engine. Bits like wheels don't just fall off. They don't crash into each other. They are maintained on time, every time. Trust AV enjoyed the cruise. |

A friend of mine is an airplane engineer and it makes me feel much safer to know that airplanes are inspected on a regular basis. They are literally taken apart and every nut and bolt inspected before being put back together. They are quite simply better maintained than any car i've ever travelled in.
