We have never been to the algarve before (usually go to Tenerife) and wondered if anyone could help with some questions. I will be travelling early July with hubby and 3 sons  15,15,11.   I am looking at the  Paraiso de Albufeira but the reviews are very mixed.
Ideally looking for somewhere with daytime activities for kids with decent pool and within walking distance to the old town.
Would have liked to go AI but the reviews on the food seem quite poor. Would it be very expensive to eat out?
I am guessing that it will also be very busy at the beginning of July.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Paraiso is great - gets good review. Forget AI as you you miss so much - better to try local bars and restaurants and much better quality. Plenty to do for the boys although nothing organised. Waterparks, beach, quad riding etc. Take a look at menu on my site to give rough of idea of food prices.

Hi annie1 and welcome to the site.

Your selection is a good option. There will be loads of other kids so your own kids will settle in real fast. And the facilities are very good there too. I am sure many people stay there and hardly ever get out of the place, as if it was like a compound. If that is what they want in a holiday, off with them.

I too recommend to avoid the AI. There are loads of great value restaurants around - plus a few expensive restaurants too. They tend to be at the obvious places and grouped together. You will not be short of choice. Any problems will be about what to do tonight - simply because there is so much choice.

I too agree with the above comments, don't tie yourself to one place to eat and drink, there are loads of fantastic bars, cafe's and restaraunts with excellent food options. Keep a look out for the tourist menu's they IMO seem to offer go value, enjoy !

Hi Annie,
Firstly: My preference is to eat out in restuarants and I treat this as part of my holiday. We like to try a different retaurant every night but we a have few favourites we always return to. Albufeira has some delicious traditional food such as cataplana, bakalow and fehioada. I once had an absolutely lovely dish (it was like a lamb hot pot) but never found out what it was called so i cant order it again.
Going AI would depend on a fair few things such as budget, how much your family like to eat, what kind of food your family like to eat and if (like me) you like a wee drink. A decent 2 course evening meal with drinks and wine for 5 could possibly cost in the region of 100 euros plus. At certain times of the year you can get a three course meal and a drink for 9.99 euros. There are a few Chinese restuarants that do all you can eat for 10 euros.

If you have been to Teneriffe then the cost of eating out in Albufeira is very similar but the food is probably better.

I had the very same discussion with a friend last week - would I go AI in Albufeira.  I personally would not although I have been to many other places around the world where I would only consider going AI.  As previous posters have commented on there is too much going on in Albufeira to restrict yourself to one place, you can get a very reasonable three course tourist menu meal for as little as €10 including a drink of an evening time, a breakfast can cost from as little as €1.75 for a bacon roll to about €5 for a full english.  Beers are around €2-3 depending on where you are - we tend to stick to the Old Town.  If the prices in Tenerife are anything like those we experienced in Lanzarote a couple of years back I think you will find Albufeira very good value for money - there are always the supermarkets to stock up on pop and snacks for the kids and, maybe the odd bottle of wine for yourselves!!

I'd just like to rectify and add to the dishes Ally was referring to.
Cataplana: There can be of fish, or a mix of meat and clams (aka "Carne de porco à alentejana)
Feijoada. Normally white beans with meat or even some seafood.
Bacalhau: That's the name for codfish and can be prepared in an infinite number of ways. Legend says there are 365 ways!
Ensopado de Borrego is probably the last dish Ally couldn't name. Basically a lamb stew with bread on the bottom.
All are delicious and should be tried on location!

The dishes I weas refering to are a wee bit different to the ones you refer to in your critique of my post.
Cataplana = Ok
Bakalow = Fried Salmon in a strawberry and cream sauce with little square potatoes (fried) and vegetables. (this was one of the nicest meals I have ever had)
Fehioada = Is a vegetable and snail soup (Vilamoura)
Ensopado de Borrego = I will take your word regarding the lamb dish.

Thank you so much for all your replies. We do like to eat in different places and have a walk around ,so I guess AI wouldn't have been that good for us anyway. Might book B&B as there is not much difference in the price between that and self catering.

The boys love to take part in activities with the animation team. There appears to be a Thomas Cook team but as we are booking elsewhere that would be a problem.

Sorry Ally. I had never heard of "bakalow" and "Fehioada". They don't seem like portuguese names to me though. Are you sure of the spelling because "bacalhau" (dried and salted codfish) is pronounced "bakalow" in portuguese, and "feijoada" comes from "feijão", beans in portuguese...
Both can be prepared in a variety of ways.

I dont really know how to spell the names of the dishes. I have written them just as the waiter pronounced them. I just know I like to eat them.
Oops Polli I am getting myself into deep water here.
Ahh I see it now, I really mean Bacalhau.
Sorry folks

You certainly don't have to apologize for sharing your suggestions and experience. We thank you for that. I didn't mean to correct you, just wanted to make your suggestions clearer in Portuguese in case someone wanted to try them.
I think I know what you had for "vegetable and snail soup". It is "Feijoada de Búzios". Búzios are sea snails (you can find pictures on google images), so the dish is sea food and white beans, a typical dish in Algarve. Very tasty.
RE the bacalhau, maybe you had "Bacalhau com Natas", cod with cream and potatoes all mixed and cooked together. Also delicious.
