Blame Ajax, who have rented the stadium for two 'winter break' friendlies during the afternoon. I hope they are enjoying their warm weather training, ha-ha!

Portugal FA Cup quarter final result

Caldas da Rainha 3 - 2 Farense attendance not published but a fair few there by the picture I saw. Farense were ahead twice, it was 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes. No replays here, so extra time was played. Farense had a player sent off seven minutes into extra time but held out until five minutes before the end.

Caldas da Rainha become the first third-tier club to reach the cup semi finals since 2002 / 2003.

No mention of the weekend's events at Culatrense in the report of last night's AFA disciplinary committee meeting. They are possibly still reading the referee's report.

But Quarteirense are in trouble again. They have been fined around €260 and docked three points for various infractions concerning their game at Messinense last week. It seems that they have also been suspended from competition for not paying a previous fine, although their fixture tomorrow is still on the list.

Their 3-2 win at Messinense has been changed to a 3-0 'administrative defeat' and the end product of that is that Messinense go above Imortal in the table, making Saturday's game rather important.

Liga Nos

Boavista 2 - 0 Portimonense att 4144. That's six games now since Portimonense's last league win. As of 1830hrs on Tuesday 16th there is STILL no confirmation on the Algarve FA website of this coming Saturday's Algarve League kickoff times.

Also, forewarning, that the Algarve FA is sending its representative team to the finals of the Portugal Inter Regions cup overt the weekend of 27 and 28 January. Clubs are lobbying for league matches on the 27th to be postponed as otherwise they will be without key players. For Imortal this would be captain Pedro Rodrigues and goalkeeper Nélio Pereira, while Ferreiras would lose six of their squad. More on that as it becomes known.

LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS NEXT WEEK'S GAMES

Liga Nos

Portimonense 1 - 2 Braga att 2833

The run of league games without a win now stretches to seven and Portimonense slip further to 13th place, only four points above the relegation zone.

Our man on the terraces said "Over the 90 I thought they deserved a draw but they paid for a very slow start. Two goals conceded then earned a penalty to get straight back in. Little Japanese wallah (Shoya is his name) hoofed it miles high and wide, last seen heading for Faro Airport flightpath! Softish second penalty went in later but subsequent heavy pressure couldn't find a second.

The Portimonense v Benfica game will be in Portimão on the Saturday 10th February, ko 2030hrs / 830pm of course for TV. Ticket prices doubled according to the Office. Not sure I want to pay E30 for the honour"

Next game is at home to Rio Ave, Monday 29th January ko 1900hrs / 7pm

Campeonato Portugal (National third tier) group E

Olhanense    2-0    Sp. Ideal

Farense maintain their seven point lead over Casa Pia. Olhanense move up to fourth. At the bottom, a welcome three points for Lusitano VRSA but only four points separate the bottom nine teams!

Normal service resumed for Ferreiras after last week's aberration. They remain 10 points clear of Silves at the top. Imortal drop to 5th.

Post above updated with confirmation of Saturday's Algarve League Div 1 games postponed, some additional news of Portimonense's game against Braga and also confirmation that their home game with Benfica will be played at Portimão with ticket prices doubled to €30.

That one is on Saturday 10th February, ko 2030hrs / 830pm for TV broadcast. Chance of getting a ticket probably less than zero unless a member of either club.

"Lofters" reports on various games recently played.

Portimonense v Rio Ave

Portimonense learned from the Braga game and started much better, with goals in the 3rd and 15th minutes both scored by Fabricio, the second a sweet longish distance shot. The diminutive Japanese guy Shoya then slalomed through and finished a neat 3rd. The locals at half time were in a state of disbelief.  Predictably Ave came out firing and earned a free kick on the edge of the box. It was fired at the defensive wall and punted deep down into the Ave half for a throw in. Chaos ensued..... the Ave players and bench were all waving their arms about claiming the freekick had been handled. The ref was seemingly 'talked' into using the VAR [which I've never seen before and wasn't aware was in use over here]. [Neither was I!] The crowd hadn't a clue what was going on and play stopped for 2mins+ as the haggling took place. Eventually the ref broke away from the scrum and made the rectangular signal, promptly sprinting down to a box situated near the Ave goal. After a quick look he sprinted back up the other end, signalling handball and pointing to the spot. He booked the miscreant and Ave scored. Pele the taker was lucky to have stayed on in the first half as after the Portimonense third he he hoofed a home player up in the air...... certain red.... but no, just yellow. The ref must have been swotting the Laws at half time because in addition he gave a foul throw in against Portimonense [which cranked the locals up even more] then penalised Ave for a backpass to the goalie. All of which were in the first five minutes! As it happened the game then cooled down, Ave pressed and probed neatly but P were up to it this week. A breakaway led to a softish penalty in the last minute. Fabricio hat-trick and 4-1.

Managed to get lost coming away, and took the scenic route home via Ferragudo. (Takes some doing - ed.) Which is very dark at 9.30pm.

Earlier, Aarhus 2 Rijeka 1. Atlantic Cup. Surprise result for me. Decent game. There were five of us spectators at this one. We all were there half an hour before kickoff but the EstAlg jobsworths wouldnt let us in the bl**dy ground!. Not happy at all. We heard the teams and introductory tannoy stuff from our positions seated on concrete blocks on the stadium approach. We got in as the kickoff took place. For the first time in my life I sent a snotty Twitter message,.... to the organisers who apologised and promised to investigate. Will see how Saturday goes.

Sunday. VRSA 0 Ideal 1. Evenly matched teams, both of whom had second half penalties saved. Headed for my first goalless game but a well worked late goal won it for the Azores. Just about deserved it as after half time they were the ones to attack the game. Credit to them as they had lost 7 of the previous 8. Crowd well under a hundred and some glum faces at the end. The mood wasnt helped by their big, lumbering substitute striker, who tamely struck the failed penalty after snatching the ball away from VRSAs nominated taker, the captain!

Louletano 0 Olhanense 1. Lively affair as a load had travelled up from Olhao. Several of those huge flags, a drum for each team [looked as if Louletano U11s had been seconded to offset the Olhao lot]. Awful pitch and a stiff breeze meant lots of hoofball. Hard fought without many clear chances but Olhao played what little decent stuff was evident and won it with a lovely high volley late on. Maybe 350+ in attendance, by far the biggest crowd I've seen there.

Thanks for those insights into the world of football down here.
