Imortal 2 - 0 11 Esperanças

Another pretty poor game, especially the second half, but a win's a win and much needed after two successive league defeats.

Two well taken goals early in the first half were Imortal's successes in a game msotly played, badly, in midfield.

Imortal went ahead on seven minutes. Indecision by the visitors and the ball broke to Chico on the right wing. He crossed  superbly to find Paollo on the far corner of the penalty area. He spun and shot, his effort was blocked by the 'keeper but luckily the rebound fell just right and he was able to latch onto the ball and stroill it into an unguarded net.

Four minutes later, Imortal were two up and a very good goal it was too. A corner was fairly well cleared but straight down the middle of the pitch to Imortal's midfielder Diogo, who from well outside the area, blasted it back at goal and very accurately, beating the 'keeper all ends up.

Very little happened after that as both teams struggled to keep the ball on a pitch made slightly awkward by a heavy shower that started just after Imortal's second goal.

The 11 Esperanças did create a chance right at the end of the first period, Nelio saved well from a close range header byut the offside flag was being raised as he did so.

The second half began well for the visitors. The forced easrly corner and free kicks from one which a looping header went just over the bar with Nelio stranded. Imortal defended this early pressure fairly well after that and began to create more chances themselves.

Paollo had a tame shot easily saved after he collected a huge clearance out of goal, Pipoca fell over his own feet midway through the half trying to control a cross, much derision from the fans as he was unmarked eight yards out. Chico shot just wide after a wind assisted clearance foiled the goalkeeper as he came out of his area.

With ten minutes of normal time remaining, Imortal were once again under pressure and this time Nelipo's second excellent save from a diving header was highly necessary. Paollo had another chance to make it three but was tacked just as he made the shot.

Five minutes additional time was announced, a couple of minutes into that additional time a visiting player was shown a straight red for a fairly evil looking challenge on sub Barradas. Previously to that the only card shown in a game of the cuustomary 30+ free kicks was a yellow for Chico after he rapped someone's shins in a tackle.

Imortal remain in 9th position with nine points and three points shy of the top half in the 'split'. Next week they travel to bottom side UD Messinense.

It's all going pear-shaped on and off the field at Imortal. Yesterday's three-nil defeat at bottom side Messinenses was bad enough, featuring as it did a sending off and an own goal by the catpain, but the club has been slapped with a €100 fine and been docked three points over the touhline ban for the head coach!

More later if I can summon up the enthusiam.

Messinense 3 - 0 Imortal

A bad few days for Imortal! First of all, we knew that head coach David Guerreiro was serving a four week touchline ban following an altercation with match officials earlier in the season. The club secretary contacted the Algarve FA to confirm the date the suspension ended but then wrote down the wrong information! As a result, Imortal have been fined €100 and docked three points for having an unauthorised or unlicensed official within the playing area. Mr Guerreiro himself received another ten days and a personal fine.

The three point deduction is going to hurt the most. It severely dents Imortal's chances of making the cut when it comes to the end of the first phase of matches.

Messinense had several former Imortal players amongs their number including the large and rather lumbering presence of Marco Benje up front, plus Sustelo, Miguel Pita and others. So, some familiarity but also no love lost between the two teams!

Messinense started the game fast and furious, so much so they managed three yellow cards within the first twenty minutes. The home 'keeper Medeiro was kept busy, twice blocking runs by Paollo and once Pipoca as Imortal had the better of the first part.

But against the run of play, the hosts took the lead on 21 minutes. A good counter-attacking move down the left was finished with a hard and powerful shot from about 20 metres.

Paollo tried to get Imortal back into the game by swapping wings, but committed a needless foul down in the corner where the home fans stand outside the bar. Not a good idea. He saw yellow for dissent then swiftly disappeared back over the other side, insults ringing in his ears.

But it wasn't long before he got into one of his moods. Twice he went down far too easily inside the area, nothing doing from the ref. Shortly before the interval, there was a break while two home players were down. Paollo unwisely chose to carry on the argument and was shown a second yellow. He was ushered off.

So, one nil down at half time and a man short.

Two minutes into the second half it was to get worse. Poor control in midfield by Miguel Nogueira and Messinense surged downfield. The cross came in from the left and hit  Imortal's captain Pedro Rodrigues on the foot and deflected into goal. 2-0.

Understandably Messinense dominated for much of the rest of the game. Their poor finishing and propensity to be offside let Imortal off the hook on a number of occasions, much to the frustration of the home crowd. A good crowd it was was too, probably 100 or 120 in their neat little stadium.

Imortal made changes as legs tired. They did get back into the game, Baldé in particular linking up with Chico in midfield, but with Paolllo sulking in the stands and the other forwards having poor games there was not a shot on target or even close.

The killer blow came on 32 minutes, another counter attack that ended with a powerful close range header from central defender Costa. 3-0.

The second half's most impressive statistic was that it wasn't until four minutes before the end that Imortal conceded a foul! Tiaginho was alleged to have done a bit of shirt pulling on the edge of the penalty area. The resulting free kick was well taken and swerved wickedly, but Nélio saved well with his feet.

So the bottom club won 3-0 and, as a result of that and the three point deduction Imortal now find themselves 11th of 12 with six points from nine matches.

Next Saturday they will be at home to Lagoa, currently fourth. Kickoff 3pm / 1500hrs

It gets worse! I've just read that the under 15's had three players sent off last week, all of whom got two game suspensions. Two club officials got bans of 1 month and six weeks respectivrely, and were also fined.

Paollo has collected a 2 match suspension as a result of his sending off last Saturday, it being his second of the season.

Imortal will be at home to Quarteirense in the Algarve Cup Third Round on provisionally scheduled for Thursday 8th December. As it is a public holiday (Immaculate Conception) the game would be in the afternoon.

However I would not be surprised if they played on the Wednesday evening.

Imortal 2 - 3 Lagoa

Imortal worked hard but were undone by a late penalty, harshy awarded for an apparent handball on a cross.

Management rang the changes after last weeks debacle. No Paollo of course, Jamil, Chico, Pipoca also dropped.  Rui Sacramento and Baldé took over in midfield, Mateus up front, Pedro Silva at the back.

Very few goalscoring chances were created. Both Imortal's goals came from penalties with scarcely another shot worth the name. Lagoa were little better in that department, but were better organised especially defensively.

Imortal's keeper Nelio was called into action twice in the first ten minutes, first an excellent low blocking stop then a nice tip over of a long range shot. Neither team dominated.

Imortal's first penalty came after 27 minutes, a clear trip on Mateus. Captain Rodrigues stepped up to take it. his first effort was well saved, the shot from the rebound was also saved but the second rebound more or less hit him to pass the now stranded goalkeeper and cross the line. Three goal attempts in as many  seconds!  1-0.

Lagoa came back strongly and were rewarded with two goals in three minutes. The first was a classic far post diving header, reminiscent of Harry Kane for England v Scotland, after a cross had eluded several others in the six yard box.

The second came after a break down the left wing, Rodrigues missed the tackle, a cross came in and a powerful first shot hit one post and rocketed across goal behind everyone for goal number two.

The early part of the second half was very quiet. Imortal had two free kicks close to the penalty area but wasted both. The second imortal penalty was awarded on 69 minutes when Tiaginho was tripped as he made his way across the penalty area. Taking the kick was delegated to Diogo, who hammered it in low and hard, no mistake there and it was 2-2.

Both sides pushed hard for a winbner after that, with Lagoa gradually exerting more pressure. Imortal's defence was stretched, Nogueira had to resort to a blatant foul to stop one attack. Rodrigues' wild clearance stopped another.

There were just two minutes of normal time remaining when Rodrigues was adjudged to have handled a cross. After the customary protests and a booking for him, Lagoa blasted home the penalty. 2-3

Two minutes of normal time then five added minutes were not enough for Imortal to mount a serious challenge for an equaliser.

That result leaves Imortal bottom of the Division on head to head results. Next weeks sees a trip to Lagos, currently sixth.

Match facts

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 19 + the penalty, Lagoa 12 + 2 penalties
Offside : Imortal 1, Lagoa 3
Shots on target : Imortal 4 (three on the first penaly, one on the second and nothing else!), Lagoa 5
Shots off target : Imortal 1, Lagoa 3
Shots blocked : Imortal 1, Lagoa 0
Corners : Imortal 1, Lagoa 5
Yellow cards : Imortal 1, Lagoa 3

IMORTAL 1 MONCARAPACHENSE 2

Desperately unlucky for Imortal with Moncarapachense snatching an injury time winner after Imortal had pretty well matched them in all departments.

The morning rain had made the pitch a bit wet in parts, but the drainage is excellent and it was perfectly playable. The wind did make things difficult, especially in the first half.

Imortal started brilliantly and were ahead on 1 minute and 20 seconds. A swift break down the right, a perfect cross came in and was met by the head of Paollo Oliveira, back after suspension, unmarked on the six yard line.

Neither team really dominated and no chances were created until mid way through the first half when Imortal 'keeper Nélio made a superb tip over save from a point blank header. A few minutes later Pedro Rodrigues stopped a shot with his nose that had him sitting and wondering for a short while.

At the other end Chico scooped a chance over the crossbar from close range and later had a good shot blocked for a corner. Some good defending kept Moncarapachense at bay and Imortal went into half time 1-0 ahead.

The visitors made a double substitution at half time, clearly concerned about getting a result. They didn't have to wait long. Seven minutes into the second half a good free kick was met by an equally good header for the equaliser. The wind had died down by then and we even saw some sun!

Few chances were created as the teams battled it out in midfield. Oliveira and Chico both had shots blocked. There was a letoff for Imortal on 39 minutes when the offside flag ruled out Moncarapachense's rare effort.

Five minutes additional time was announced, the clouds had come and it was getting dark. Then the cruel blow, a deep cross to the far right hand post was not dealt with by Imortal's defence leaving a fairly easy tap-in.

Imortal's next game is on Thursday afternoon (public holiday) ko 3pm / 1500hrs in the Algarve Cup against Quarteirense.

Another day of disappointment for Imortal. They came back from a 2-0 deficit to level things at 2-2 at the final whistle. There's no extra time in the Algarve Cup, so it was straight to penalties. Both teams had one of their first five saved, so it went to sudden death. Quarteirense were going first, so when their seventh went in the pressure was on Imortal's defender Canito. Unfortunately his effort hit the crossbar, Quarteirense were the winners.

No big report as the game was played on the 3G pitch where there is no where to sit and scribble except in the bar! The gusty and often strong wind played a part, both teams found it very difficult to get any sort of control. As a result the first half was a pretty horrrible and scrappy mess with few chances.

Quarteirense took the lead a few seconds short of four minutes, a swift counter-attacking move down their right wing, which was finished well from the edge of the penalty area.

Imortal did manage one half chance which the visitor's keeper saved well. Quarteirese increased their lead on 38 minutes, another swift raid that had Imortal's defence looking as statues!

But Imortal pulled one back within three minutes, the ball being scrambled in, I'm not sure who by and neither was anyone else. But a fracas enused as Imortal went to pick up the ball from inside the goal, the Quarteirense goalkeeper grabbed hold, punches were thrown and it ended up with the goalkeeper and Imortal midfielder Maia both being sent off.

2-1 to Quarteirense at half time.

Imortal had the wind in their favour during the second half and had the better of the game. An important change early on was the appearance of Chico from the bench. His good passing game helped Imortal create several chances, but the replacement 'keeper was up to the task.

The wind was getting worse, everything was difficult but with fifteen minutes remaining good work by Tiaguinho and Pipoca set up Paollo Oliveira with a close range chance, which he took well. Neither team did much after that so it went to penalties.

Next game for Imortal is on Saturday, away to the other Quarteira team, Quarteira SC.

Next home game and the last one before 2017 is Saturday 17th at home to Culatrense.

Unable to go to Quarteira yesterday as the important local derby in the bowls at Balaia had to take priority.

Anyway, Imortal had a 0-0 draw against Quarteira SC, a welcome relief after six straight defeats. They are still though three points adrift at the bottom of the table, with nine games to play in the first phase.

(My team lost the bowls 2-1 and we are bottom of the table!)

Couldn't go yesterday, beign stricken after a bout of over eating and over drinking. Unfortunately Imortal lost 2-1 to Culatrense, which leaves them still stranded at the bottom of the table. There are only eight more more games in the first phase, so it looks for certain that Imortal will be in the second phase group of six fighting to avoid relegation.

No local football now until 7th January.

Imortal 1 Silves 1

A fair enough result as neither team really dominated, although Imortal did create more chances and had a bit more of the ball, especially in the first half. Both teams found the fairly strong wind difficult, balls cleared by the goalkeepers barely reached the half way line in one direction. The pitch though is in very good condition. There were even two blokes out at half time replacing the diviots, something I have never seen before. Probably looking after the pitch ahead of the Women's Cup matches in a few weeks time.

Imortal had reshuffled the pack yet again, with veterans Canito and Claudio as fullbacks, Baldé playing in a strange position sometimes as part of the back four and sometimes in midfield. Baldé had a poor game and was replaced at half-time. The strikeforce was a bit lightweight, with two inexperienced players in Maia and João Monteiro leading. No Paollo  Oliveira today.

The early minutes were rather tentative as the players struggled with the wind. Imortal, playing with the wind, were gradually getting organised when a Silves counter-attack was ended by what seemed a perfectly good tackle by Canito, but the ref awarded a penalty. After a minute and half of protest, the kick was taken and scored. Silves were acclaimed with a smattering of applause from their small contingent in a crowd of about 100.

Imortal's first semi-decent chance went to Baldé midway through the half, but his shot was blocked. Some poor passing was letting Imortal down. Baldé did fashion a long range effort that was easily saved, but as for chances that was about it apart from a scramble at a corner which Silves eventually hacked away to safety.

Silves had good chances to increase their lead as the half drew to a close. A great tackle by Fisher stopped one raid, then he was at fault when an awkwardly bouncing ball eluded him, but captain Pedro Rodrigues was on hand to make the saving tackle.

Half time 1-0 to Silves from that penalty, which was their only shot of any description.

Silves had the wind at their backs for the second period and immediately started to send long balls downfield. In the early minutes, a good save by Imortal's 'keeper Nelio smothered one good effort. Silves did fashion some good moves, but five times the offside trap was their undoing.

Imortal drew level after 11 minutes, a slightly lucky goal which eventually crossed the line at the third attempt. A corner was swung in, the Silves 'keeper scrambled to keep Diogo's effort out and fumbled, the rebound header from Maia hit the upright, the ball bounced down into the melée and eventually fell to Monteiro, who toe poked it in from close range.

Maia had a good effort stopped at the second try, as Imortal were pressing forward to deny Silves possession that they could use in the wind. For a good many minutes Imortal had the better of the game, Diogo was woefully off target with a header from 10 metres after good set up play by Monteiro down the right. Several other shots were just as wayward. Claudio got himself booked for a classic veterans tackle on the half way line, it was obvious the opponent would have shot past him as a hare.

With fifteen minutes to go, Nelio made a very good block save, unfortunately with his nose. He was down and out for several minutes but, fortunately he recovered.

Both sides had the opportunity to win the game in the closing moments. Imortal's sub Coutinho was caught in several minds after a defensive error presented him with ball on the edge of the area. He ended up tripping over the ball, to the disgust of the home fans. Six minutes were added.

Silves caused a certain amount of panic in the home defence with huge passes into the penalty area but luckily they were unable to capitalise. The game finished at 1-1. Imortal  are atill bottom of the league with six games remaining in the first phase.

Imortal have scored only 11 goals in 16 games (remembering that two were chalked off) while they have conceded the fewest goals in the bottom six, allowing for the 0-3 score for that unfortunate discipliniary error back in November.

The next game is the important local derby at Ferreiras, next Saturday at 1500hrs / 3pm. Ferreiras will badly want the points to keep up with Moncarapachense at the top of the table. Ferreiras won the reverse fixture by 1-0.
