Imortal 0 Lagos 0

A game that Imortal could have won, even playing with ten men for nearly an hour, following the mysterious sending off of wing-back Tidjane Baldé ten minutes or so before half time. Considering that Lagos are third in the league, one place above Imortal, they were very poor. They managed not a single short on target and few of any description.

A nice sunny day, a bit windy, the pitch was dry and in places bumpy and bare of grass. That does not bode well for the various 'winter break' matches scheduled for mid and late January.

There was very little to write about for the first half hour, apart from a corner swung in by Cascalvo that caught the wind and skimmed the crossbar. The rebound fell to Matteus, his shot was blocked. Lagos counter-attacked, the final shot went just wide.

The game then became fairly silly, with a lot of petty free kicks, bookings and not helped by an over officious referee. A few minutes of that came to a head when Imortal were penalised on the half way line, right on the other side where we couldn't quite see who was involved. A crowd scene developed, there was lots of the usual pushing and shoving among the players. A red card was held aloft, a very angry Tidjane Baldé practically had to be dragged off the pitch. As he left he hurled abuse at the Lagos bench.

Despite there having been four bookings and a sending off, the ref allowed only 1 added minute and the teams went in goal-less. Two unusual statistics - there was not a single offside flag in the 45 minutes and only two corners, 1 each.

Imortal made a sub a half time, the speedy Cassiano replacing Nasir. It worked, as Imortal played with purpose and determination in the attempt to break down the visitors defence. Cassiano and Flavinho were winning important challenges, especially when out jumping their midfield opponents.

Oliveira had a good early chance, his shot on the run from 15 metres tested the ´keeper but was saved. Imortal were well in control, assisted by some woeful passing by Lagos, often  under pressure from the men in red but sometimes not. Unforced errors would be the term.

Another strange statistic, after 17 minutes of the second half there had been only one more free kick. Didn't last, things soon degenerated with Lagos being forced to adopt spoiling tactics as Imortal kept threatening. Their lot saw four yellow cards in the second period. Cascalvo blasted a free kick over the bar, Oliveira had another chance but didn't make up his mind to shoot before being blocked, Mateus fluffed the rebound.

A glorious opportunity fell to Flavinho with 15 minutes remaining, a quick break out and he found himself faced with the 'keeper way out of his goal. His chip shot from 30 metres floated ever so slowly towards goal then just wide.

Lagos managed to steal a corner but typically it went straight into the side netting. Another a few minutes later curled out of play before reaching the strikers. Their coach was doing some kind of war danced at this ineptitude.

Another chance came Imortal's way with a few minutes to go. This time a corner was whipped in from the right by Cascalvo, centre back Calado just couldn't get his head to it. Flavinho had a decent long range effort go just wide, Lagos were absorbing the pressure well.

Again the ref was very ungenerous with added time, four bookings and five substitutions and he allowed only two minutes. Muttering in the stands, but had Lagos scored travesty, injustice etc!

Imortal stay in fourth place, behind top side Ferreiras, played 14  points 38 they were held to a 1-1 draw at Faro e Benfica, Silves in second place are on 28 points, Lagos have 24 points same as Imortal and are ahead on goal difference. Imortal have now not lost in eight consecutive matches, conceding only three goals. Something is going right!

The League and clubs now shut down for two weeks over the Christmas and New Year holidays. Fixtures resume on 6th January, when Imortal will face a difficult trip to Faro and will play Culatrense.

Yesterday - Culatrense 1 - 0 Imortal a poor game at which the main event was a mass brawl at the end involving almost everyone in both squads, managers, trainers etc and police on the pitch with batons drawn to damp down disorder.

More later.

Culatrense 1 Imortal Albufeira 0

The referee will have a lot of writing to do after this one. I am certain that both clubs will be given serious punishments for their conduct in game that grew increasingly tetchy as it went on, culminating in a mass brawl at the final whistle involving all the players, substitutes, coaches (except Culatrense's who had already been 'sent off') and which had the three normally indolent policemen on the pitch, batons drawn.

Imortal took the field in a slightly strange formation. Chico, the small and industrious midfield playmaker, took up a position just behind the front two of Oliveira and Flavinho. What this was supposed to achieve I have no idea, as none of them had any influence on a very poor first half.  Midfielders dominated, no-one put their foot on the ball. The synthetic pitch had a very high bounce, the ball was hard to control and the 'floodlights' emitted the barest trickle of illumination.

Everything was set up for a bad one.

Imortal did survive one scare. A hopeful punt by the hosts, Pereira came out of his goal and missed the ball in the twilight. (The game had started at ten past five.)  The loose ball rolled towards the goal but experienced defender Canito raced back just in in time to hook it clear. Imortasl did gain one chance with a free kick but instead of heading for goal, they tried something out of the playbook. The result was the worst free kick ever, the ball going backwards across the field for a throw on half way.

No score at half time. There had been only one yellow card thus far, but it was clear that a couple of feuds were developing.

To be fair, both teams came out for the second half with more energy and determination. Culatrense had their reward after seven minutes. Again, Pereira came out for the ball, but seemed to again lose his bearings and  just outside the area he handled it. There were many players around him, so the question was 'little handball' or 'big handball'?

Much consultation between ref and assistant ensued, prompted by the near hysteria of the home team to have Pereira sent off. The upshot was a booking and a free kick just outside the area, more or less central. Cue howls of rage from the bench and home fans.

Unfortunately for Imortal, the free kick was well taken, curled around the wall and in off the post for the only goal of the game.

Then the cynical time wasting and game spoiling began.  Oliveira woke up and a speedy run was well stopped by the goalkeeper who made a meal of his 'injury'. Meanwhile another defender went down. During a long stoppage, Imortal captain Rodrigues called his players together. Although we could not hear,  nor hardly see, what was said, the message soon became clear. Try not to get involved, play football and we can get something.

That didn't work though. As the challenges became rougher, Imortal players became angry and bookings ensued, three of them. Add a yellow for a handball by Oliveira, there were four for the visitors. The Culatrense head coach was sent from the touchline after a childish attempt to stop Imortal taking a quick throw in front of his bench. A melée ensued, much pushing and shoving but no further action by the ref, which did the rest of the game no good.

The last 20 minutes was almost all Imortal pressure on the home goal but few decent chances were created. Oliveira narrowly missed converting a great cross from Maia, substitute Baldé had a powerful free kick blocked. Six minutes of added time came to naught as the free kicks mounted up.

The final whistle blew then it all kicked off. It was hard to see what started it, but all over the pitch words were being exchanged, then pushes, then punches and a fairly spectacular kung-fu kick by an Imortal sub that had him running for his life pursued by several opponents. Flavinho was involved in a personal argument with one of the assistant refs.

On came the previously bored policemen, out came the batons as they first went to the match officials to shield them from any wrath.  However the players were warring among themselves, so GNR then began suggesting that they clear off. Which they eventually did.

I think the Algarve FA disciplinary committee will have work to do at their meeting this Thursday. I shall post the outcome as soon as is known.

A reminder here that Imortal's next game is next Saturday, 13th January, at home to Messinense ko 7.30pm /1930hrs

Imortal 3 - 1 Messinense

A game that had its moments, particularly in the first half when three well crafted goals gave Imortal a solid lead, but spoiled by a whistle happy referee. A total of forty-two free kicks plus a penalty interrupted the game time and again. There was hardly a malicious tackle, it was all silly little ankle taps, pulls and suchlike.

The game was slow to get going, neither side had anything like a chance for the first quarter hour, except for a goalmouth scramble that the visitors defence managed to deal with.

Then things sparked into life. Paollo Oliveira, such a peripheral figure last week, sent in a great cross from the left which Elvis, on the far post, headed into the side netting with the goal at his mercy. He atoned for that miss a couple of minutes later. Set free just inside the visitors half, he lobbed the onrushing goalkeeper from all of 35 metres to put Imortal into the lead.

Imortal were in control, helped by some very poor passing by Messinense added to a total lack of ambition. Ten minutes before half-time Imortal went two-nil up. A free kick delivered by Baldé was poorly defended, the loose ball fell to defender Nogueira who had time to chest the ball down, turn 180º and slam in a shot from 15 metres. It became three nil just before the interval when Oliveira found space on the left, headed towards goal, out came the keeper again and was once more lobbed. This time though Oliveira had to follow his own shot and tap it in.

Messinense were very slow to emerge for the second half, no doubt words were said. As in the first half, the game was very slow to get going and it wasn't until almost 15 minutes of play that anything noteworthy happened. It was a lucky escape for Imortal when normally reliable goalie Nélio Pereira dropped a simple cross at the feet of an opponent but the resulting shot was deflected for a corner. Pereira atoned for that error moments later, the corner was swung in and he made a fine flying save from a long range shot.

Messinense maintained the pressure, resulting in a penalty given away by Nogeuira, who was comprehensively beaten down the left and his tackle on the goal line was so late the ball had already long since been crossed. No mistake from the spot, 3-1 and perhaps a glimmer of hope for Messinense.

But their lack of ambition and poor passing weighed against them, they created few chances and what they did manage was ably dealt with by Imortal's defence. The visitors played the last few minutes with ten men after a second yellow was shown, but by then the game was lost. Oliveria had a late opportunity to get a fourth for Imortal, but blazed a shot just over the crossbar from a short distance out.

The win takes Imortal above Messinense and into fourth place, they have 27 points from 16 games.

Next game for Imortal is away at Silves next Saturday, kickoff time not confirmed on the official website but almost certainly 3pm / 1500hrs. That will be followed by the Algarve Cup second round tie at home to Odiaxere, Wednesday 24th at 830pm / 2030hrs.

Shots off target : Imnortal 4, Messinense 2
Shots blocked : Imortal 0, Messinense 2
Corners : Imortal 5, Messinense 3

Yesterday, Silves 1 - 0 Imortal. No report as I was unable to go.

That and other results leaves Imortal in 5th place with 27 points from 17 games. The priority is to finish no lower than 6th so as to be in the top group during the second phase.

Next game for Imortal is the Algave Cup Second Round cup tie on Wednesday evening, ko 2030hrs / 830pm. Visitors are Odiaxere, currently 4th in the second division.

IMORTAL ALBUFEIRA 2 ODIÁXERE 1

Alagrve Cup Second ROUND

A patchy peformance by Imortal over very unambitious Second Division opposition. The second half was much better than the first.

IMortal were without captain Pedro Rodrigues, rested before the inter-regional tournament this weekend. Paollo Oliveira and Miguel Cascalvo were also on the bench, but both came on as substitutes to good effect.

The first half was pretty uneventful, except for a good header sent just wide by defender Jamil, up for a corner. Otherwise efforts were few, far between and pretty poor. Odiáxere were content to soak up any Imortal pressure for the most part. Although they did have  a better spell towards the end of the half,  they did not trouble goalkeeper Pereira.

Oliveira came on at half time for Imortal and immediately set about changing things. A well struck shot was saved, then he set up Cassiano, who blazed the ball over the bar from the edge of the penalty area.

The script changed after twelve minutes of the second half. Odiáxere snaffled a goal literally from under the nose of Pereira in goal. A free kick wide left, by the corner arc, was hit hard across at at head height. First to react was an unknown visitor, whose glancing header found the net from close range.

Imortal responded, an overhead kick by Cassiano brought a very good save from the 'keeper. Cascalvo came on to further change the game and within minutes Imortal had levelled. A great through ball found Oliveira on the run, he controlled and then steered it past the 'keeper from ten yards.

Imortal by now had all the game and went ahead through an own goal. A free kick routine from the training manual actually worked! Cascalvo squared a free kick to Chico, who threaded a pass into the right hand corner where Oliveira was on hand to cross. Confusion in defence, a headed own goal once the ´'keeper had missed it.

Five minutes added time were announced. Imortal remained n control and saw out the time without problem.

The 'reward' is a third round tie in São Bras de Alportel against Sambrasense on 7th February.
