Just announced on the Beeb -

Portugal has taken austerity measures to a new level with the decision to scrap four of its 14 public holidays.

The four days affected are All Saints Day on 1 November; Corpus Christi, which falls 60 days after Easter; 5 October, which commemorates the formation of the Portuguese Republic in 1910; and 1 December, which marks Portuguese independence from Spanish rule in 1640.

Working on that term 'competitiveness' (spelling) that the Troika are so stuck on at the moment.

Lets hope the smaller shops who moan about the superstores can now stagger the staff lunchtimes and stay open rather than close for 2-3 hours. It'd help their trade.

This takes effect from 2013 for at least five years. And one thing to note is that if a public holiday falls on a weekend, there is no 'day off in lieu' as in the UK.

Biut of course the only people who get these holidays are those who work in the public sector plus offices, banks and much of the public transport. Those who need it most ie the low paid staff in the big supermarkets, are forced now to work on public holidays.

It is the same here in the UK most private companies have it written in to contracts that employees must work some bank holidays and not with any extra pay or day in lieu. There is also pressure to cut them.

Hi all

Although I got the day off last year for Wills and Kate's wedding, we're not getting the Queens Diamond Jubilee.
