Well you have now. The beach is now about 50 metres wider than it was and about 2 metres higher. the main reason for the work was to slow down the erosion of the cliffs, which were becoming very dangerous. Five people were killed here last year when they ignored the warning signs and sat under a cliff, which collapsed. |

I've read through this topic with great interest. My only visit to Albufeira was in Feb 11, before this work started, and we'll be there again this summer. I presume that in Winter the Atlantic becomes rougher. How is the new sand holding up to the heavy seas?

Well so far the new beach structure hasn't really been tested. Seas have been very quiet in comparison to previous winters. That is probably for the good, as the new sand will have had time to settle down and become more compact.
The work down at the Auramar end should be finished this week, so I will go down and get some more pictures. |

Thanks Cubsur.
We'll be at Clube Oceano in the Forte Sao Joao area so perhaps we'll be able to walk to the town along the beach at high tide. |

Jock - you can walk along the whole length of the beach at any state of the tide now. It's that much higher as well as wider.

A little reminder of how far the tide came in before. You can see the danger sign about 2 or 3 metres up at the bottom of the rock, it is now level with the sand.

I remember last August, the waves were causing a 1 meter high step in the sand which was gradually working its way back towards the cliffs down the Eastern end.
Has much been lost back to the tide since?

This picture I took on Friday clearly shows the step in the sand by the pier. We've had nothing much in the way of rough seas for a long time so things seem stable at the moment.
Meanwhile, down at the far end, there is now a substantial breakwater wall to help prevent the sand from being washed along the coast. |
