I wonder if the sunlight will also have a positive effect on the sand colour over a year or so. The drying of the sand will certainly help the colour.

Cheekygirl - the timetable I saw had the work up to the pier due to be finished next week. They area ahead of that schedule by my reckoning.

They are going right along the beach, past Inatel right to the end by Auramar.

J2me - that's what I was thinking. The new sand is a little coarser than the old sand, more the colour and texture of the sand on the cliffs. but a while in the sun and the effect of feet and sea and i am sure it will lighten up.

Rest of the pictures? Go this way

Lordy! that beach looks so massive now! I hope it won't become another Praia da Rocha, a beach that i loathe. who wants to walk miles to the water?  Anyway I understand why they need to do it, the erosion is very bad and something needed to be done I guess, but I can't help but think it looks rather... yuck

Looks good - is there any talk of them doing Falesia beach as this is getting really bad too, especially at the Olhos D'Agua end between Golfinos Restaurant and the Sheraton Beach Club. In fact the Sheraton made their own "attempt" to sort things out last year by putting in some large poles & some sort of sacking holding up (or trying to hold up) tons of very rough & stoney sand. It was a complete bodge but thankfully most of it got washed away again during the winter. That is apart from the poles (and some sacking) which now stick out of the sand & make "their" part of the beach dangerous & ugly. Still I suppose if you're the Sheraton you can do anything you want & get away with it.

When they get further up the beach where the beach bars are and sunbeds will this affect their business, if so will they get compensation.

They aim to be finished before main sun bed time. No compensation of course, but without the work there will soon be no beach to put the sun beds on. They cannot have it both ways. They are now working between the pier and Inatel. They had a day off on Tuesday because of the rough sea, but work resumed Wednesday afternoon.

Yes it's 24/7 provided the sea is not too rough. Will update on Sunday.

Hi Cubs,

It will be interesting if you could get some photo's of the first batch of "new sand" laid near the elevator, to see if it has lightened up as it dries out, must admit by your previous photo's the beach looks fantastic, cannot wait to sit on it in June Thumbs%20Up

Is it just Albufeira's beaches or will they be continuing on down as far as Sta Eulalia?

So far as I know only the town beaches are in this project.

^$£$£ camera wouldn't work yesterday, so off  down town later to see what's what. They were working by Inatel yesterday afternoon.

They were working directly in front of the Inatel building on Monday afternoon. Here's a couple of pictures. The rest will be in my albums page later.

This general shot of the beach shows the extent of the new sand. it is half tide. The white areas are the crushed sea shells marking the tide line. You can see how narrow the beach is beyond the Inatel, the white building top centre.
