It won't be dropped - too much money has been spent already on the infrastructure and systems. The organisation that administers the major roads (the equivalent to the UK Highways Agency) is €2 billion in debt and needs the income. An alternative is even higher vehicle taxes, which cannot be avoided. Tolls can. A worse alternative is less maintenance, meaning potholes etc.

The elections are due on 5th June.

Expect the revival of toll implementation some time after that. Meanwhile enjoy the two or three months respite.

(It's not just the A22, several new motorways in the north were also due to have tolls implemented. They have have also been postponed.)

Avril I had an email from the Algarve Observer and it seems it's true but how long for it didn't say, only that the tolls had been suspended pending a new government.
