Re Búzios (Sea snails). we went to a BBQ at a local bar last year and there were bowls and bowls of these snails on the table, all the locals eating them with a toothpick/cocktail stick with the look of joy on their faces. I was encouraged to try them, so being the devil I am, toothpick in hand dived in the bowl, well I couldn't say I enjoyed them, the texture is not my scene, in fact I did have to turn away and use the nearest flower planter, shame on me. I suppose its all about what you are used to. If there had been a bowl of Camarao I would been in my element, dived in and not given anyone else a chance.

Speaking as a visitor to Albufeira that has been AI and SC I would definitely recommend going self catering. The AI is very restrictive both time wise and by menu compared to other places I have been.  At the particular hotel that I stayed in it was pork, pork oh and more pork. It was like they had some kind of pork deal with the local supplier! Despite the lack of variety the food was alright  but it was nothing compared to the food we ate a restaurants on previous trips.
 
Would never go AI again.
 
The restaurants in albufeira are lovely and you really dont get the vibe of the place when you are stuck in the resort for your 3 meals a day.
 
Go to the local supermarket and stock up on snacks, drink etc and then enjoy the experience that Albufeira has to offer.

I know its wandering off subject but admin, or anyone else, could you tell me what the soup is that you get at pingo duce and other restaurants. Bit vague I know but I think main ingredient is some kind of bean.
They had a recipe in a supermarket flyer last time we were there but I forgot to bring the flyer home!

You certainly don't have to apologize for sharing your suggestions and experience. We thank you for that. I didn't mean to correct you, just wanted to make your suggestions clearer in Portuguese in case someone wanted to try them.
I think I know what you had for "vegetable and snail soup". It is "Feijoada de Búzios". Búzios are sea snails (you can find pictures on google images), so the dish is sea food and white beans, a typical dish in Algarve. Very tasty.
RE the bacalhau, maybe you had "Bacalhau com Natas", cod with cream and potatoes all mixed and cooked together. Also delicious.

I dont really know how to spell the names of the dishes. I have written them just as the waiter pronounced them. I just know I like to eat them.

Sorry Ally. I had never heard of "bakalow" and "Fehioada". They don't seem like portuguese names to me though. Are you sure of the spelling because "bacalhau" (dried and salted codfish) is pronounced "bakalow" in portuguese, and "feijoada" comes from "feijão", beans in portuguese...

Thank you so much for all your replies. We do like to eat in different places and have a walk around ,so I guess AI wouldn't have been that good for us anyway. Might book B&B as there is not much difference in the price between that and self catering.

The boys love to take part in activities with the animation team. There appears to be a Thomas Cook team but as we are booking elsewhere that would be a problem.
