Brazão de Castro Marim

Castro Marim county is divided into the following parishes:
Altura; Azinhal; Castro Marim; Odeleite

Municipal Holiday : 24th June | Inhabitantes: 6.600 | Area: 300 km²

Circled by the Guardiana River, Castro Marim surveys a fabulous inland landscape, perched up on the horizon. To take a trip on the Guardiana River is to discover more of the northeast Algarve with its overpowering, unforgettable contrasting green countryside.

Castro Marim offers its visitors beautiful beaches of fine, golden sand washed by a blend of blues and greens of the temperate waters. It is possible to visit the salt beds and watch the process of drying salt and also observe fauna, bird and marine life in the marshlands, as this location is part of the Nature Reserve of Sapal.

Amongst the monuments to visit we recommend the main Parish Church, St. Anthony’s Church, and the Church of Misericórdia. The Castle and Fortification of St. Sebastian have magnificent views over the marshlands and inland hills. A three-day Mediaeval Festival, well known throughout the country, is held in the Castle at the end of August.

In the small villages of Odeleite, Azinhal, Almada d’Ouro and Beliche little or nothing has changed over the years, maintaining their narrow winding streets of whitewashed cottages with blue trim around the doors and windows where many work activities still take place sitting on the doorstep.
