To begin season 2011/2012

Imortal play at the Albufeira Municipal Stadium. Games are on Saturday afternoons, normally with a 3pm kickoff. Admission was €2,50 for adults last season. Don't know what it will be next season. There are no programmes and there is no club shop. There is a bar.

The League season begins on Saturday 1st October. Fixtures are due out on Tuesday 6th September and will be here as soon as I can write them up.

Pre-season games are normally played behind closed doors to avoid having to pay for police attendance. If I find out about any, I will put details here. Most clubs will only be starting their preparations this week.

The other Algarve League teams in the immediate area are Guia and Ferreiras. Their fixtures and results will be published every week.

Fixtures for 2011/2012 are out. Imortal start on Saturday 1st October with a home game against promoted side Estombarense. Game ought to be at 3pm and will be confirmed nearer the time.

Complete fixture list

http://thomasallen.home.sapo.pt/travel/imortal.htm - http://thomasallen.home.sapo.pt/travel/imortal.htm

Bad to note that there are only nine teams in the Second Division this coming season. Paderne and Sambrazense have not entered, the latter despite finishing second in the Division Two and  being promoted. No-one was relegated from the national leagues following the demise of Beira Mar de Monte Gordo

Pleased to report that admission remains at €2,50 and that the club shop was open on Saturday. Several visiting Brits were spotted wearing their newly purchased Imortal shirts.

Fairly good crowd today, about 200, considering all that is going on!

There is a video on line of the match last Saturday v Estombarense!

Go to this website

http://www.digitalmaistv.com/

Click on 'Desporto' and it's the top left hand item.

it's the whole game! The only goal came after 89 minutes if you want to fast forward.

Apparently they will do a different game every week the whole season, with a pre-match interview etc on the Thursday or Friday before.

cubsur,

Many years ago I suppoted the Imortals but now I live in Aljezur I now follow them.  Last year it was good to visit the old ground, sadly we were the whipping boys and found that we were relegated to the 2nd Div. But, we will be back!

Have a good season.

I think we will be passing you in the opposite direction. Football has big problems here, with only nine teams left in the Second Division.

Thanks for that Cubsur. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the game. I reckon its the same standard as a Scottish second or third division game as i have seen plenty of them.
We (Imortal) were a little bit unlucky to loose that late goal as we had a chance to clear the cross. I will not complain about the woman linesman as I would be banned from the forum (Remember what happened to Andy Gray and Richard Keys).
I look forward to your reports and pics of the Imortal games to come this season.
Thanks

Hi guys,

Thanks for the link to the game. As for the leagues, they should have dropped a couple of other team to level the 1st & 2nd divisions.

Now the lady linesman, I think the other year she was a ref and broke her arm whilst Aljezur were playing Quarteira. She ran the line last year at one of our matches, at first she was good  but after a while her view of the game differed from both sets of supporters!

I will watch the Imortals porgress  via this site and :http://www.footballzz.com/edicao.php?id_edicao=25803

Cheers,

Firsty cubsur, thanks for answering my e-mail a couple of months ago. Now.......................

To save me wearing my "yellow" Belper Town shirt for the Match on the 15th V's Ferreiras,
Do you think the club shop will be open and is it at the ground? any idea of the price? I'll bring the correct money.

Also, anyone fancy meeting at the ground for beers and footy talk?

Also, Also, as I'm just a footy fan , I read another post (which I can't now find) stating that Ferreiras is only 2 miles away, and they are at home on the 22nd V's Lusitano, Is it walkable? bus? or best in a cab? I could get another game and shirt while I'm over! (If you know where I can just get the Ferreiras shirt would be helpfull)

Mikster - welcome back

The Imortal club shop is inside the ground. I don't know the price of the shirts for certain but I think I heard the chaps last week say 40 or 45 Euros, but don't quote me on that.

I will be at the game v Ferreiras on the 15th but will precede that by watching Liverpool v Man Utd at Floyd's Bar, which is about 10 minutes walk from the stadium. You would of course be welcome to join us there for some erudite discussion.

The Ferreiras ground is about 3 miles from the centre of Albufeira. There is a bus (Linha Laranja or Orange Line) every half hour from the main bus station, which stops about 100 yards from the Ferreiras ground. These go at 10 and 40 minutes past the hour and take about 10 minutes to get there. If you are not within walking distance of the bus station, there are other city buses to get you there. The fare is €1,10 and your ticket can be used on different buses for up to 1 hour.

Buses come back at 5 and 35 minutes past the hour.

I will tell you more about that if needed.

I will probably be going to Ferreiras myself tomorrow afternoon, there being no other games nearby and with Imortal off away out in the wilds. I haven't seen a club shop as such on previous visits, although they did have a small range of souvenirs on show in the bar. I will see what I can find out.

BTW Ferreiras kickoff at 4pm, which does make it a bit less of a mad rush to get there after whatever game is on TV at 1245!

Today

Imortal 1 - 1 Ferreiras

A very good game, well worth the admission. Imortal made up in enthusiasm and effort what they lacked in skill and experience.

Ferreiras ended the first half in front, courtesy of an error by the Imortal goalie who dropped the ball in front of an opponent. The first half was fairly devoid of incident but the second half was not.

Imortal were awarded an early penalty for handball but it was taken very poorly and saved. Ferreiras were much the better team and our goalie made up for his earlier mistake with two outstanding saves.

Ferreiras had two goals disallowed, the second of which one of their subs objected to so loudly he was sent off from the bench. Don't see that very often.

With fifteen minutes left, another handball in the area gave Imortal a second penalty. The defender was sent off and this time the penalty was smashed home.

A good crowd of around 350 gave both teams a deserved round of applause for a good game on a very hot afternoon.

On a slightly different tack, my neighbour, in Portugal, tells me his son is the goalkeeper for Guia, so presumably that's him in the pic.

No it doesn't bode well for Imortal as we are now next to bottom after yesterday's games.

Imortal 2 - 2 Moncarapachense. A good result in the end considering Imortal had a player very harshly sent off with 30 minutes remaining. Blatant cheating and time-wasting (by both sides it has to be said) resulted in six minutes of added time which eventually became eight. Imortal were 2-1 up going into stoppage time but couldn't quite hang on. The visitors equalised and there wasn't even time to kick off again afterwards.

Imortal took an early lead from a penalty, converted by number 6 Sandro, conceded the first equaliser when the goalie fluffed an easy take and took the lead again when the  Moncarapchense 'keeper made an even sillier error, dropping the ball at the feet of Nuno  Mendes.

That result leaves Imortal second to bottom with 3 points from five matches played.

At least I won second prize in the raffle.

Earlier, as the first part of a double-header, the Juniores 'C' lost 1-2 to a very useful looking side from Évora.

I will do a round up of the various age group teams standings later this week.

Today's result :

Faro e Benfica 0-0 Imortal

Added to Saturday's home 2-2 draw with Moncarapachense that's four draws and two defeats in the first six games.

A poor game on a tiny synthetic pitch in possibly the most insalubrious area of Faro. Glad to get away.

I don't have all today's other results but I think Imortal remain second to bottom, among half a dozen teams who are not doing very well.

The Horta da Areia ground in Faro is well up on my list of places not to watch football! It is surrounded by a smelly salt marsh, an untidy gypsy camp, a disused chemical works and a council dustcart depot.

Not much happened in yesterday's game although we did make the home goalkeeper pull off one reasonable save towards the end. Both sides missed an easy chance after that. There's one result still missing from yesterday but Imortal will either  be in 14th or 15th place (of 16) after five matches.

The same goalie had to go on a bit of a run to thwart another opportunity

A quick run down of how the Imortal junior teams are doing. These are the teams in the national leagues

Juniores A (U-19) Serie D 10th of 12 teams, 6 points from 8 games
Juniores B (U-17) Serie D Top of the League! 25 points from 10 games
Juniores C (U-15) Serie F 3rd of 12 teams 20 points from 10 games

The District Leagues are under way but information is very hard to find.

The Algarve Sport website (www.algarvedesporto.pt) is no longer listing any current football or futsal fixtrure or league table information. So far as I can tell, the Imortal age group teams are sufficiently exalted that they play only at National level. There is hope yet!

IMPORTANT - the season fixture list has been changed following pressure from clubs to fill blank weekends in the calendar and bring the season to a close earlier than the end of May.

All fixtures from 19th November have been brought forward one or two weeks. This also means that  the Algarve Cup matches will be midweek and two sets of games in December are currently scheduled for a Sunday rather than a Saturday, although this might change.

Revised fixtures for Imortal at http://www.algarvebus.info/imortal.htm - http://www.algarvebus.info/imortal.htm

Returning to today's match the words "Top of the league, you're having a laugh" came to mind. What a shower! Os Armacenenses haven't yet played any of the top teams and will get seriously found out if they play like that against Lusitano or Ferreiras. Having said that, they took the lead after 13 minutes when Imortal's defence gave their main striker enough time to have a three course lunch and enough space to lay out his bed. Simple pass, swivel and shot. Goool for the many visiting fans to celebrate.

Imortal got better after that but the pressure was to nought. Nuno Mendes hit a post towards the end of the half; it remained 0-1 at half time.

Playing with the wind in second half proved a distinct advantage. Armacenenses defence went into panic mode early and conceded a free kick just outside the area on 49 minutes. Up stepped Rui Sacramento and curled in as good a free kick as you could wish to see at any level. 1-1. Decio on the Imortal right wing was a constant threat but lacked support in the centre. The wind didn't help. blowing several crosses away from heads.

Imortal had a good twenty minutes or so after that, but a double substitution by the visitors turned the tide.  A good reflex save by Pedro Bernado and another shot pushed onto the crossbar kept the visitors at bay. They were also guilty of a couple of horrible misses.

Four minutes stoppage time was a bit nerve racking but Imortal held on to be the first team to take points from Os Armancenenses this season. Good crowd, around 200 I reckon, including a lot of visiting fans.

That's now just one defeat for Imortal in the last five matches, including draws at home to the teams placed first and second, but no wins. There was one evening game today, so I don't know yet if we are 13th or 14th place.

Next Saturday it's a long trip to Monte Gordo to play Castro Marim.

Cubsur,

How your league has changed, who would have thought the team (Os Armacenses) with a ground that appears to be a sand quarry! could be heading the division. Plus the team that beat us (Aljezurense) 6 -1 last year and finished second in the league are now floundering on the bottom step!

It's a funny old game!

I hope the Imortals bounce back soon.

Armancenses are playing home games at Silves while their new ground is being built. Perhaps they like playing on grass. They hadn't played any of the top teams until Saturday, when they drew at home to Lusitano.

Their old ground has been sold for yet another tourist resort development but there was no sign of work taking place when I as there a few days ago.

Algarve football is in a parlous state with many teams folding or in danger. The cost of running a club is colossal when you consider that attendances are numbered in the 100 - 200 range paying just €2,50 maximum.

Bah! I didn't notice until Saturday morning that the kick-off time had been changed to 5pm, which meant I couldn't go to the game having made an arrangement to see some people at 5.30! So, of course Imortal won, 3-1, their first win of the League season.

Those welcome three points propel Imortal up to 12th place. next Saturday it will be away to Alvor, who are just one point ahead.

Yesterday

Alvor 2 - 0 Imortal two defensive errors in the final ten minutes cost Imortal the game.

Playing football at Alvor has all the charm of entering a high security prison with the actual pitch surrounded by a 2 metre high chain-link fence. You can only see the action through the holes.

Much of the game was eminently forgettable. Alvor thought they had scored in the first half. The ref awarded them an indirect free kick, clearly signalled at the time, but such was the drama that by the time they came to take it two minutes later they had forgotten, the ref didn't repeat his signal and up strolled this bloke to whack it into the net. Imortal's 'keeper hadn't forgotten and allowed the ball to go past him, making sure he didn't touch it. Initially the reaction was of course gooool and for a few seconds it seemed the ref had forgotten he had given an indirect kick. Much shouting, then the assistant reminded him and the 'goal' was disallowed.

Other than the goals, Imortal hit the post with a free kick mid-way through the second half and an Alvor player was booked for the most outrageous piece of diving I have ever seen.

Both goals came in the last ten minutes, neither goalkeeper had even made a save before that.

Attendance about 100, half of whom were in or just outside the bar.

Alvor prison

Imortal hit the post - sorry there is some digital blur on this one

Culatrense 2  0 Imortal

The game can kick you when you are down. Their first was an own goal a few minutes before half time, the second came in the 89th minute when we were all down the other end trying to equalise. Despite having the  major share of possession we managed only one shot on target in the whole game , which I could have saved. Culatrense played a nasty, spoiling, game in which they conceded a ridiculous 26 free kicks and picked up four yellow cards. At least our discipline was better this week, only ten free kicks conceded and one yellow card, not so much for a dive as the exaggerated yell that went with it. Fool.

Here's their first. looked like an own goal from where I was and several others thought so as well, but perhaps not.

Some more pictures tomorrow.

Well got that wrong! The coach has bought in some new players, heaven knows where from and we seem to have found a goalscorer. Imortal won 3-0 with a hat-trick from a new player name of Kita if I got that right.

It's ages since we scored 3, let alone all from the same player.

A welcome three points, only the second win of the season.

Next game is this coming Wednesday, December 21st, away to Alvor in the Algarve Cup. No games in the Algarve Leagues on December 24th or 31st.

Olhao is only 6 or 7 miles, so is the closest, if the game is still at 4pm Sunday. Buses or trains available from Faro city centre.

Portimonense's game would be do-able only if you made the 1242 train from Faro. There's nothing after that on a Sunday until after fourn o'clock.

I suggest you check back here in a couple of weeks before arrival and I can confirm everything then.

Yesterday : Estombar 0 - 3 Imortal. Not the best game I have ever seen and there were a couple of defensive errors that would have been punished by a better team but when you are down the bottom, a win's a win.

Imortal took the lead after 28 minutes. New scoring sensation Miguel had time to make a cup of tea, drink it, read the paper and then chest the ball down, turn and blast it it in from the six yard line.

18 minutes into the second half, Imortal increased their lead. Defender João, number 3 in the picture below, had an easy tap in on the far post from a corner after the Estombar 'keeper had missed the ball.

The game was sealed with 5 minutes left, Miguel rising at the far post for a looping header over the goalie and into the far corner. It could have been four, Miguel hit the post a couple of minutes later. A good result that takes Imortal out of the immediate danger zone and into 12th place of 16.

Cubsur,

Good result lifts you up a bit, next game against CRD  should be tight.

Aljezur are still on a winning streak! So we might meet up next year but I understand there is a big shake up due to all the leagues!

What are your views on the Ref's and Linesmen (+ 1 woman) ? Do they know the basics?

Why are the Linesmen there, they only flag IF they see a blatant offside, as for shirt pulling and off the ball incidents they seem totally blind.

A problem they have here is the disappearing teams. Three dropped out of the league from last season. It is so expensive to run a team even at this level that few can afford it. Yesterday at Estombar admission was 1 Euro! Even so only about 60 people turned up.

There is also a considerable disparity between the top three or four teams ie Ferreiras, Lusitano VRSA, this season Armacenses and the rest. With only one promotion place there is little incentive for the rest to play at all. I don't know what prize money there might be, I suspect none.

The League used to be run in two section, Barlavento and Sotavento, with a play off at the end of the season to determine the overall champion. I hope they don't go back to that as it would even more uncompetitive than the present setup. However a 9 teams Second League cannot be sustained. Let's hope they see a bit of sense and maybe have the teams play each other three times if there are only a small number.

I have read that the Liga de Honra (Ligfa Orangina) is going to admit the 'B' teams of six of the  top sides and that League will increase to 22 teams. That is going to mean the sides in that Division will have to play more midweek matches (poor babies) but that I expect the current ridiculous League Cup format to be changed back a straight knockout. The average crowd for those games so far played is less than 1,000 which is pathetic even by local standards since the teams involved are only from the top two divisions.

The object of the exercise is to allow the younger squad players to get some meaningful competitive matches. Basically the big boys will field players under 23. There is no reserve team football here and most of the 'B' teams were disbanded a few years back. The clubs are now realising the error of their ways, as a player cannot be expected to suddenly perform on the big stage if he has not played any sort of competitive football for weeks on end.

If Portimonense stay in the Liga de Honra (highly unlikely given their current form) that would mean an extra six games of half decent football for us to watch down here. But they lost again yesterday, at home, in front of just 937 fans.

I ran a stat comparison last year on the amount of football played in the Algarve and a similar region in UK - Cumbria. Populations are similar, geography similar.

Adjusting for this season, the Algarve has 32 adult football teams.  Teams, not clubs. That's one for about every 14,500 people.

By comparison, Cumbria has about 120 teams, or about one for every 4,000 people. And that's only Saturdays. Throw in around 45 Rugby League teams and 18 junior RU teams, that is nearly two hundred lots of blokes taking an active part in sports every Saturday, mostly not being paid for it either.

So what are the Portuguese all doing with themselves?

Turing to the question of referees etc, compared with the UK (I was a ref there for 25 years) they are very officious, blowing up for every minor offence. It is not unusual to see a game with 50 free kicks. I have a note from the Culatrense v Imortal game on 10 December where the home side conceded 26 'fouls', Imortal 10. Half of these would not even register in an English game, but the refs are not helped by blatant cheating, diving and screaming which many Portuguese players seem to regard as part and parcel of the game. Remember Mr C Ronaldo when he first came to play for Manchester Utd? He didn't understand that tackling is allowed.

One thing I noticed yesterday was that the officials were often very lax on the taking of throw-ins. Five or even ten metres from the correct position is seemingly acceptable, often similar with freekicks. So when I referee local teams against visiting touring sides, they are outraged that I should  actually ask them to go back and take a throw or kick from the correct position.

Shirt pulling is either missed or ignored by officials at all levels, sad to say. It's often difficult to spot, but when it is seen it should be penalised. One day we will get six penalties in a game, if on the box I hope the TV will prove the ref/assistants correct within the laws, but I bet he or she will be  severely castigated by the media!

Having said that, the ref yesterday was pretty good. There were no outrageously strange decisions except for one penalty appeal for Imortal which, from my vantage point, even I would have been tempted to award. He rightly booked about three of their players for some very clumsy challenges and one of our lot for a trip on a fast runner which, another few yards closer to goal, might well have been a red.

The assistants are there to assist. As they are neutral and qualified they should be flagging for things they see but the ref cannot. I did. But to be honest it's not something I have no studied here. Next Saturday I shall try to keep an eye on things from that perspective.

Right, I am off to a place of refreshment shortly to watch Newcastle v QPR which should be interesting given QPR's new manager, then to witness Saint Thierry of Highbury do damage to Swansea.

Saturday 21 January - Imortal 3 - 1 CDR Santaluziense

Made hard work of it at times, especially in the second half. Had a penalty saved in the 42nd minute, scored with a good move a couple of minutes later to go in 1-0 at half time. Early in the second half a nice little chipped cross and a deft header by Miguel Pita made it 2-0. The visitors came back and our defence allowed them to run through unchallenged to make it 2-1 half way through the half. Imortal got back into the match, forced a couple of chances and the game was sealed when the Santa Luzia goalie made a total hash of catching a straightforward cross and spilled the ball into his net.

That takes Imortal up to 10th place but there is a difficult game next Saturday away at local rivals and top side Ferreiras.

Ferreiras 2 - 0 Imortal

A game we probably didn't expect to win but the means were there. Imortal had two penalties, both of which were saved. We also hit the post twice. Ferreiras also had a penalty which our goalie saved. An over-officious referee managed to book four Imortal players over one incident, which must have been some sort of record. One for the original foul, one for dissent, one for failing to go back ten yards and a fourth from among the subs, presumably for dissent as well but i couldn't quite see.

Ferreiras 'keeper makes his first penalty save. Note the Ferreiras player in yellow. I didn't spot that, but no way could he have got there without encroaching before the kick was taken.

Imortal 1 - 1 Guia. A game we could have won, but a horrendous error by 'keeper Pedro in stoppage time gifted Guia an equaliser. A free-kick was not cleared properly, Guia regained possession. He flapped at a cross, missed it and the ball was nodded in.

It was overall a horrible, messy game in, I am afraid to say, typical Portuguese style with players screaming for free kicks every time they were touched. The referee obliged, awarding 42 free kicks (I counted) with Guia shading the 'foul' count.

Six Guia players were booked, three from Imortal plus a sending off, which was very confusing. Imortal were poised to make a substitution. A player (Miguel) was trudging off, he was told by the coach 'no, it's not you coming off' to which the reply must have been 'no, I've been sent off!'

The ref must have produced his cards like a conjuror, we never saw them.

Imortal's goal was as goal a free kick as you would wish to see. Six minutes into the second half, a free kick was awarded about 20 yards out, just off the corner of the penalty area. Rui Sacramento stepped up and curled the ball inside the bottom of the near post.

Yesterday's other results mean Imortal slip to 12th while Guia are up in 7th.

An uninspiring but necessary victory this afternoon in front of a very small crowd. Beat Faro e Benfica 1-0, neither goalkeeper was greatly troubled in an untidy game except for the visitor having to bend over to pick the ball from the net after Imortal's 36th minute goal, which turned out to the winner.

Won 7-2 yesterday evening! It wasn't as one sided as it might look, in fact we were a goal down after 4 minutes. 3-1 up and half time, let in a sloppy goal then roared on with four well taken efforts.

It does make a difference when you take the chances, especially against the team fourth in the  League! And it did the goal difference no harm.

A necessary win as well. Silves won again. More tomorrow.

It was a good game for the spectators on Saturday, plenty of goalmouth action. Imortal went one down in just four minutes and we all though, here we go again! But Castromarinse had played on Wednesday in the cup and were short-handed, only naming two subs.

Imortal's first goal was a slightly dodgy looking penalty on 26 minutes, the ref had a long look and asked the linesman to confirm before he awarded it. Rui Sacramento stepped up, it wasn't the best penalty in the world but 1-1 it was.

Five minutes later Miguel beat the offside trap and lofted the ball over the 'keeper for number two. The same player was on target from close range a few minutes later to make it 3-1 for half time.

The second half begain with a good save by Imortal's guardian, Pedro then a few minutes into the our offside trap failed dismally leaving an easy chance, 3-2.

Then it all went silly. Half way through the half Imortal brought on a young player name of Ramos. I hadn't seen him before but he had a big impact on the game. Immediately after the substitution, Miguel crossed from the left for Pita to volley home from ten yards. 4-2. Two minutes later, Pita scored again this time with a diving header from a perfect cross by Ramos, on the  right. 5-2.

A few messy minutes followed, then on 38 minutes Raos beat two defenders and calmly scored from ten yards.  Another attack followed straight from the kickoff, which ended in Miguel colliding with their goalkeeper and getting a yellow card for some reason unknown to man.

Pedro was booked soon after that as our offside ploy failed again. He had to rush out of his goal to make a last ditch tackle. A cheating visiting player screamed loudly enough to convince the ref it was worth a booking. He was of course back on his feet, undamaged, a few moments later.

Then  in stoppage time a silly penalty for Imortal. One of our lot had a shot, I couldn't see who it was and a defender stuck his hand up in the air even though it was going miles high. The ref shrugged his shoulders as if to say 'what did you do that for?, booked him and placed the ball on the spot. Decio lashed the penalty past the keeper, after which the ref stopped the fight early to save hapless Cartromarinese from further punishment.

Imortal are in 12th place now, nine points ahead of the relegation line but with some difficult games coming up

Imortal's best league win of the season and possibly for a few seasons!

The home record is a lot better, four wins and a draw out of the last five but the away performances could be improved as it has been three consecutive defeats now.

Another big win yesterday, what is going on? Imortal 7 - 0 Alvor. I couldn't go owing to illness.

Now level on points, just below mid-table, with Guia and Culatrense and only three points needed from the last five games to guarantee no relegation this season.

At home again next Saturday, Quarteira SC the visitors.

0-0 yesterday at home to Quarteira SC. Terrible game, full of petty fouls and generally unpleasant to watch. Small crowd, less than 100. There were 43 free kicks for 'fouls' plus 9 for offside meaning there was very little football in between the stoppages. Imortal did have two good chances amongst the dross. Miguel Pita headed over the bar on 22 minutes, totally unmarked, he should have done better. The same player struck a post with a fine shot with five minutes remaining.

Other results yesterday mean that Imortal are now mathematically safe from any threat of relegation. Normal round up tomorrow.

Nothing in the top three national divisions as Olhanense,  Portimonense and Loulé are all away.

Yesterday - Lusitano VRSA 2 - 1 Imortal. A good game overall, worth getting wet for. Imortal played particularly well in the second half, having gone in 2-0 down and had the league leaders on the rack for the final 20 minutes. So much so that three home players were booked for theatrical time wasting in the last 5 minutes and they were reduced to keeping the ball in the corner to avoid dropping points.

Imortal (in red) pile on the pressure

Imortal's last game of the season is next Saturday, 28th April, at home to Campinense. On Saturday they beat Silves 2-1 thanks to an excellent free kick from top scorer Miguel Pita (we won't keep him next season) and a slightly dubious goal off a rebound that was flagged over by the linesman, leading to mass protests by the Silves players and some fairly ugly scenes at the end prompted by a couple of spectators. For once, the presence of the three armed police was justified!

The game was a a typical niggly, cheaty, Portuguese game with fifty-one free kicks (I counted them) of which Silves were responsible for 29. They had a player sent off at the end for a second yellow.

Imortal signed off the season with a good 4-2 win over Campinense. A hat-trick of well taken goals from Miguel Pita was the highlight of the afternoon. Imortal were comfortably 4-1 up with a few minutes left, Campinense were gifted a goal (our defence is still a bit uncertain) and then they hit the crossbar so the last few minutes were a bit fraught.

Imortal finished 7th on goal difference, the highest position since relegation from the national leagues in 2008.

Final league table

Elsewhere, Ferreiras could only draw their final game so the League title and promotion goes to Lusitano VRSA. However, I heard from a reputable source that they have not paid their players since January and are in serious financial trouble.

It costs €540 just in fees and charges to put on a home game in National III and the doubters say there is no way  VRSA can sustain this on average attendances of 100 paying €6 each to get in!

Full round up tomorrow.

On the back of your comment on VRSA not paying their players, Liga Sagres side Leiria only fielded 8 players yesterday, after 16 players handed in resignation letters over delays in payments.  (The team lost 0-4 by the way).  Club president has said one of the players stole a suitcase of money from the club prior to the match (€5,000).

I am sure they always use a suitcase to bank the gate receipts. Would hardly have raised an eyebrow at the financias or the GNR I am sure...

Posted By: cubsur
Date Posted: 01/May/2012 at 09:38
The 'crowd' at the Leiria game was 1278. Leiria decamped from the huge Euro 2004 stadium in the city and play now at the much smaller Marinha Grande stadium a few miles away.

So, 1278 average 10 Euros = €12780

Their opponents didn't manage to score until the end of first half stoppage time so the eight men did well for a time. Leiria are bottom of the league and will be relegated, if they survive.

I wonder what prompted the mass gathering? Their two previous home games against ordinary teams attracted (if that's the word) 683 and 717. Their recent game against Sporting saw the stadium full at nearly 5,000, so I wonder what happened to the 50,000 Euros or so in gate receipts from that one?

To put that into context, Imortal had about 120 fans there on Saturday. It was a 'club day' being the final game of the season and members got in free - it's normally 1 Euro. Non-members paid €2,50.

Or, by comparison, Woking in the Blue Square South League (level Six) had 4,000 for their last home game of the season. The chap I chatted to last Saturday (a director of Campinense) said he could only dream of even 400 turning up to his games (their average attendance is 60) and they complain that €2,50 is too expensive to watch Algarve League games.

Hello Cubsur

We're in Albufeira, Friday, August 31st - Friday, September 14th.
Is there anything happening on the local football scene, or is it too early for league games?  I notice last season didn't start for Imortal until 1st October. Does the same apply this time? Are there any pre-season friendlies I could go to?

Short answer to the above is no. The Algarve League begins on 6th October. Pre-season matches are no advertised and usually played behind closed doors.

IMORTAL FIXTURES 2012/2013

League Season starts 6th October. The league is in trouble. Many teams have dropped out  for financial reasons (one item being the €150 for the mandatory three armed police required to keep order among average crowds of 100) and so far the League has only one Division of 17 teams. There is no sign of long established clubs such as Guia, Campinense, Santa Luzia and Estombar. One new side is Algarve United. I don't know if this is a resurrection of the short-lived club of the same name that was around six or seven years ago.

Also gone are Tavira, Bensafrim, Serrano and Quarteirense B.

Complete Imortal fixture list - Algarve Cup matches not included. The draw was apparently made on Friday but I cannot find it.

http://www.algarvebus.info/imortal.htm" rel="nofollow - http://www.algarvebus.info/imortal.htm

A bonus perhaps this coming season is that the champions will be promoted to the National Divisão II (third tier) as the National set-up completes its reorganisation with the abolition of the National third tier. Third tier clubs will be subsumed into the appropriate regional leagues.

The complete fixture list can be found at

I would just like to express my appreciation of the work you put in reporting on and explaining the Portuguese football scene. As someone who has been involved in local amateur football for most of my life it's interesting to get an insight into the situation over there. It has echoes of the grass roots scene in the UK as lond standing local leagues in my area (Greater Manchester/Cheshire) continue to fold due to lack of clubs. Just ten years ago one of our local leagues had four divisions and over 50 clubs. Last season there were 7 clubs in the top division and 8 in the second, playing each other three times. They could of course have gone with just one division with 15 clubs, but they wanted to try and preserve the promotion element. This season they have ceased to exist. Seems there are a mixture of reasons. Lack of interest among youngsters, increasing costs involved regarding council pitch hire at over £450 per season for alternate weekends and increasing kit prices have all taken their toll.
The local schools football scene is quite healthy, but it seems very few youngsters carry on in the sport after their schooldays are over. All very sad.
I didn't see any mention of schools football in Portugal. How are things in that department?

How sad that clubs fold due to lack of funds for pitch hire, while two of the richest football clubs in the world are on the doorstep.

There is no school football here. Almost all the clubs have junior teams from 7 or 8 years up to Under 19's but after that there is virtually no football played.

Here in the Algarve (as is the case in most of the country) there is no amateur or 'park' football as in the UK. All organised football is played on enclosed grounds with proper referees and linesmen. The lowest standard is around that of the country senior leagues in the UK. Three seasons ago the Algarve League had 28 teams in 2 Divisions. Several clubs folded during the summer through lack of sponsorship and general lack of money. Average attendances for many clubs was less than 100, admission is just €2,50 which many think too much. Referees charge €150 a game!!

Now we have just 16 teams in one division. Add the other teams : Superliga 1, Segunda Liga 1, Division II south 2 and Division IIIF 3 that is a total of just 23 adult men´s football teams in a region of 440,000 people. There are no reserve or B teams.

Last year we compared that with Cumbria, similar population, similar geography and we stopped counting at 135 football teams, not to mention the Rugby Union and Rugby League setups.

Coincidentally, I have just come off the phone from a call from a chairman of a local League back in Kent for whom I do their website. He told me that one of the local councils has, at a week's notice. increased the price of a pitch by £10,50 to £72. OK that's only a £1 a player on subs but this is not helping.

All the fine words  by the FA about helping 'grass roots' football means nothing to the thousands of clubs who use council pitches, as they cannot get their hands on one penny of the FA's largesse.

Is that £72 per match? So a modest total of 12 home games per season will set them back £864!  And I thought Trafford Borough's Â£450+ per season was pricey!

Yes, £72 a match. Luckily for some clubs one of Leagues has a block booking arrangement with said council that removes the VAT when clubs settle their bills, but the other only has three or four members using those grounds so they have to pay the full whack.

Also, there is almost no maintenance apart from grass cutting and the lines being painted once a month. Many of the pitches are effectively out of use during the rainy season from mid November to the end of March.

The same council said a few years ago, in a meeting, that they had neither interest nor desire to provide outdoor sports facilities for 'a minority'. The local Sunday League has 2,000 playing members. Facilities are gradually being run down.

That situation is mirrored to some extent around Albufeira. There is almost nowhere where kids can go for a kickabout. All the football pitches are fenced off, although to be fair the three local clubs each have a full sized floodlit 3G pitch as well as the grass for the main team, so the facilities are in use almost every night until late. But you have to be a club member and pay. The local club had to put a stop to what they described to me as being expected to act as a free baby sitting service, where kids could be dumped for two hours of an evening.

Off topic we are straying, but the debate is the same here as well as in England. Everyone says that we must get children and young people out doing something active instead of sitting indoors getting fat playing computer games or being outside in the dark robbing old ladies, but the truth is that it's cheaper for the parents to shove the child in front of a screen and they don't of course have also to worry about what he or she is doing and who with and where.

If anyone wants to follow this up, I will move to Chit Chat forum.

We wuz robbed! Imortal 1 - 1 Odéaxere highly dubious non-award of a penalty, we had a bloke sent off for a tackle that wouldn't even raise comment in the UK and they scored in the last few minutes when we were down to 9 men, with the sending off and an injury.

By the way, the fixture list has changed a little bit. Castromarinense, who did say they were pulling out, are back in the League.  Imortal will therefore have an away match with them on Thursday 1st November, the All Saints Day holiday. Ko 3pm to be confirmed nearer the time.

Lost 0-1 at home yesterday to Os Armacenenses (Armação de Pera). It was one of those games where we had all the possession, especially in the second half, but could not create many chances and missed those that we did. Then, with 5 minutes left, they broke away, won a corner there was a  mix-up in defence and somehow the ball was scrambled over the line. That provoked the kind of celebration you would expect if they had won the world cup final. Show offs. Even the goalie ran the full length of the pitch to join in.

Then the referee gave only three minutes of stoppage time, despite there having been  the usual feigned injuries and squabbling, plus the ridiculous minute-long goal celebration. That prompted some very uncomplimentary words from the Imortal faithful. Just for a moment the gun toting police guards seemed that they might have to do something to do to justify their 50 Euros a time fee.

Next game is this coming Thursday (which is the All Saints holiday) way over in Monte Gordo against Castromarinense, then after that the next home game is on Sunday 4th November against Culatrense. Both games to be confirmed on Tuesday.

Imortal 2 - 0 Aljezurense  Saturday 10 November

Not the best game of football I have ever sen but a win's a win. In truth, had it not been for timidity in front of goal and a game plan that relied too much on keeping the ball rather than being adventurous. Imortal could have scored five or six. They dominated the play for long periods, Their keeper Leandro had one shot to save in the entire match.

In contrast I counted seventeen goal attempts for Imortal, but the majority were either blocked because they were too slow or were easily saved by the 'keeper.

The first goal came after 37 minutes, a good cross in from the left by Muguel Pita (who otehrwise had a nightmare!) was met by the head of our new big lump of a centre forward Marco Benje. Benje has been recruited from the Messinense team that folded and his header from six yards gave the goalie no chance. Let's hope for more.

The second was scored after 51 minutes by Fua, who has come up from last year's Under 19 side. A nice pass and an effective run put him one on one with the goalkeeper who he beat with an efficient low shot.

The remainder of the half was almost all Imortal but everyone seemed to be trying to get into the perfect position rather than take a chance. Pita was guilty as charged more than once.

A welcome two points and Imortal are now 8th. They will visit Silves (13th) next Saturday.

Full round up of all the Algarve league results on Monday.

The worst I have ever seen Aljezur play. The centre half and right back are ***. We have not been able to play the same team twice and it shows. I agree that the Imortals should have had a bucket full of goals.

Having missed some recent games, returned to the stadium for Saturday's game against Algarve United. The result was a 2 - 0 win but it could and should have been more. Some very good chances were missed. Imortal now rise to 4th in the table, temporarily, as I don't have the two results from yesterday evening.

The match started well enough, Imortal going ahead in the fourth minute when Benje lowered himself skilfully to make a diving header from a good cross by Miguel. It went downhill from there, poor passing from midfield giving the forwards no service. The ball was in the net on the half hour, but it was disallowed for offside.

Algarve United defended well but were very poor up front.

Imortal created several good chances in the opening minutes of the second half but the United goalkeeper was up to the task. It took an own goal to increase the lead. Midway through the half another good cross from Miguel was turned into his own goal by a defender under pressure from Benje. Pita hung his head in shame on eighty-five minutes, one on one with the 'keeper and his attempted chip went fully five yards into the goalie's hands. Miguel hit the post in stoppage time. Imortal should have won easily, but a win is a win.

Next Saturday they have a difficult trip to league leaders Moncarapachense.

The draw for the Algarve Cup was made over a week ago but I cannot find it on the FA website. Several recent 'communicados' are shown but the links don't work.

Fixture change - Imortal will be at home to Silves on Wednesday 9th January, ko 2000hrs / 8pm.

This game was originally scheduled for mid-March but has been brought forward so that Silves don't get too far behind with their fixtures while their own ground remains unusable. The match at Silves which was postponed in November will therefore take place in March.
